I'm a 33-year-old gay black male moving to ATL in the coming months. Initially, I thought Midtown would be the best spot, since it is Gay Ground Zero.

But a few people suggested I reconsider because they said Midtown is more a spot for those in their 20s and that I might feel a little out of place as I move into my mid or late-30s. Basically, they said I'm too old for Midtown. They suggested Buckhead instead.

So, I'm just curious what you think about those concerns. Would Midtown be too young for me now or in a couple years?

If so, are there any other good spots for gay guys in their 30s or 40s?

Hmmm...I don't know. I don't think that Midtown is only about 20 something year olds and circuit parties. I certainly have seen mature gays relocate to Midtown - downsizing and wanting a more "pied a tere" lifestyle. I think it all depends on what you are looking for. Do you want to walk out and experience the city or do you want more space and a quieter neighborhood?

I'm definitely an urban man. I love being able to walk to restaurants, bars, shops, theater, etc. This is most important to me! I don't necessarily need to live RIGHT in the thick of the city, but I'd like to be within a 15-minute walk of the action.

I kind of fear suburbia, but I have no desire to do keg stands, inhale Jell-O shots or attend raves. I'm not trying to stagger home drunk every night.

This may sound cheesy, but it would be awesome to find a community with friendly gay neighbors. I've never lived in a place where such a thing existed, but I've heard it's possible in Atlanta.

Then Midtown is likely the best spot for you, regardless of your age or sexual orientation.

First of all whoever gave you this advice is very swallow and limited on there information about Midtown. Midtown may have the strongest presence of Legal professional in the city. I highly doubt you find Lawyers, Paralegal, and Legal Assistant hanging out Monday through Friday like those in there twenty that may work at min. wage to 10 dollar per hour job. Most Quality people in Midtown may hang out on Saturday night, and then go to the park on Sundays. Most of the twenty years olds I find in Midtown generally are just hanging out being idle or cruising for sex.

I found the large gay presence in SF made the pickin's better for us straight guys. Could this be true in Midtown, also? Would people be whispering: "he's straight..."? Would girls want to go out with me as a front?
