Atlanta's Size (Columbus, Macon, Sandy Springs: college, square footage, living)

I Think That Atlanta has a Large City vibe to it, but it is really only 131+ square miles. Even When In Atlanta or the interstates it seems like a big city which is great. The Only key factor i believe Atlanta is missing is the Large Size. If Atlanta was Larger it would be a quite Triumphant city! A reasonable way to increase the size and population is Atlanta to consolidate with Fulton County like other Georgia cities including Macon, Augusta, Athens, and Columbus. Or maybe Atlanta can Annex with neighboring cities/suburbs like Sandy Springs , College Park, Roswell, Johns Creek, Alpharetta ,Marietta ,Smyrna or others. What Do You Guys think.

The city of Atlanta can't annex areas like that unless they agree to it, and that is extremely unlikely. I can't imagine how it would benefit those areas to be part of the city of Atlanta.

I don't think the Atlanta city government would like it either, since it would radically alter the political landscape.

Manhattan is only 23.7 square miles. SF is only 46 square miles. Square footage doesn't have anything to do with what makes a city better. If anything, it's the opposite, great cities have more going on in a smaller area.

All that you suggest are like mines in a vast minefield.

I think Atlanta as a city is frozen out from growth. Sandy Springs and the rest of North Fulton want to leave Fulton County. An Atlanta merger with them is even further away from their agenda.

If I could dictate what should be done, I'd break up Fulton County and have the City of Atlanta join Dekalb County. Have North Fulton and bit of North Dekalb become Milton. South Fulton could be spread among the surrounding counties but I don't know the political climate there to suggest what should go to whom. Maybe a super Dekalb County/City of Atlanta county could form from that. But I'd move the location of political power to Decatur.

That's possibly true. I use to like the idea of City/County cover large areas, but now I'm not so sure if it is an improvement. It's especially difficult here with the county structure of metro Atlanta.

It's a long way from the city of Atlanta's agenda, too. Any such merger would totally upset the current political status quo and probably result in the unseating of a number of current pols and administrators.

They are having a tough enough time living together in the same county...imagine what it would be like if they were in the same city.

It would feel more like a big city if it had a dense core. Densify the central 10-15 square miles. As someone else said, Manhattan and San Francisco, some of the country's most dense city/areas has a small land size, yet they feel massive when you're actually in them.

It doesn't need to annex more land. What good would that do other then arbitrarily increase the city's population because of more land. Atlanta would just become another Houston or Jacksonville.

Build up it's core first, then let's talk about plans to annex more land around the city.

I don't know how you can do that. Both Manhattan and San Francisco have physical limits that force density. Atlanta does not.
