Well, I'm sorry to hear all this. I was under the impression FedEx was a great place to work.

It used to be but plans have been in the works for a long long time to maximize profit anyway they can.
Good paying full time positions are being phased out at Fedex Express as new technologies make it possible (or so they think) for part time hourly workers to do the same thing, MEANWHILE, Fedex Express is phasing out Express saver (2-3 day product) and shifting the Express 2 day volume to Ground.

For those of you that don't know, Ground, is the separate , but not really, entity run as a trucking company whereas Express is run as an airline. They've been lobbying congress and fighting legislation such as the Railway Labor Act that would make it possible for their workers to unionize and they have created a system of independent contractors that assume tremendous amounts of risk and financial burden for comparatively little reward vis a vis their rivals in the brown uniforms.

So jobs aren't really being created here as the title of the article suggests. Jobs are being eliminated.

All histrionics aside, it is quite disappointing that some solid middle class jobs will be loss in the name of the "profits and nothing else" mantra.

Why is this stuff not being reported on? It's like we Americans are fighting the management vs labor wars of the late 19th and early 20th centuries all over again.

Is history really repeating itself before our very eyes?

That's the problem. The jobs aren't paying/providing hours enough to provide for thier families anymore so they end up on the government assistance anyway, especially if they have no benefits.

Companies can do what they want and I think they should have the right to pay and give any amount of hours they see fit, but let's look at the big picture and be intellectually honest. This type of situation doesn't really put us in a better position overall so there is no point in praising it for what it is not.

If you owned a media outlet, lets say COX for example, (The same company that takes money from advertisers and litters the streets with spam papers) and Fedex spent millions of dollars to advertise on your TV stations and newspapers, would you...
a.) Report on how Fedex is slashing jobs
b.) Report on how Fedex is "creating" jobs
c.) Report on swine flu, killer bees, weather, the terrorist threat created by people smuggling toothpaste in their carry-on luggage, or who Charlie Sheen endorsed for president instead of Fedex?

You people have to be negative about any positive job news for the city. Every job that comes here isn't going to be a $100k position

Dude seriously, how can you read all these comments and still make this remark?

Look, I will defend Atlanta to the hilt against any unreasonable opinions and my posting history shows that. But at some point, it is time for a little intellectual honesty here. We should be avoiding the Fox News/Baghdad Bob route of reporting all news as good news regardless of the nuances & details involved.

It's what makes America better as a country and us citizens better as a people.

I don't work in transportation industry, but I would be willing to bet FedEx and all its competitors are doing the same way to save money: higher more temps, and part timers and fewer permanent employees because the mark up in delivering goods is extremely low and rates are "fiercely" competitive. Full-Time employees cost much more than temps do when you factor in all costs per employee, particularly with health insurance for an average seasoned (older) worker.

They probably have these different companies in order to spin some of them off more easily than if they were all together integrated within the larger company. Lots of larger corporations (conglomerates) in many industries have had this tactic for a while.

I do know as an outsider, many transportation companies fight unions tooth and nail because they end up costing a transportation company lots of money and aggravation. As we know unions never really did well in the South and unions in the U.S. particularly have become somewhat obsolete over the decades.

Maybe your arguments are true that is a net job loss with this announcement. Probably true, but the idea of being a permanent employee at some company for many years is becoming less and less common in most any industry.

Not to get long-winded and off-topic, but wages in the U.S. have been artificially high and are continuing to decline, so companies cut costs wherever they can and they certainly do this with their employees. Rank and file employees are disposable and replaceable and even more so when they are temps or hourly employees.
