What makes Forsyth and Cherokee so overwhelmingly conservative?

Romney got around 80% of the vote in Both Cherokee and Forsyth. They are by far the most Republican counties in the metro. The other strong GOP counties are Coweta, Fayette and Paulding, but Obama at least was able to get around 30% in those areas. For those of you who have spent a lot of time up there, why do you think Democrats are about as popular as communists in those two counties? And don't simply say "because they're mainly white." There are many white suburban counties that are much more competitive. Let's try to keep this civil.

Also, how do you think Metro Atlanta will vote in future elections?

The percent who 'get' from the government is smaller.

Most work for themselves, own small biz's, or work for MegaCorps. And don't want more government, they want less, Obama want bigger gov. Republicans say (not that most do anything to get it) smaller government.

It is a combination of race, religion, and economic demographics. These counties are also much more white than other suburban counties like Cobb and Gwinnett. Cobb is about 55% white while Cherokee and Forsyth are in the 80-90% range. We won't get into why different races vote the way they do but it is a fact that black people just about all vote for Democrats, Hispanics are about 75-25 Democrat, and white people are about 75-25 Republican. Poor people vote Democrat and wealthier people vote Republican as a whole Here is a site that breaks down different demographics for the 2012 election: U.S. Presidential Election Center

That may be true nationwide, or in this state, but it certainly isn't true in other states. There are many heavily white states which are also heavily Democrat.

then why does dawson county vote harder republican than forsyth, every time? honestly, it's the perfect storm of what remains of racial cleansing that lasted for nearly 100 years around this area and neo-conservative folks from other parts of the country that may have racist leanings as well. however, as more of your business types move into forsyth, it is slowly becoming less republican.

it has nothing to do with the percent who 'get' from the government— the assumption that white people don't use welfare, medicaid and other government is not only complete bull****, it takes a degree of mental retardation to even think that would be the case. this is not directly at you, flyonpa— btw, your comment just made me think of a lot of people who use the same line of reasoning to apply race to the equation.

To assume whites vote Republican because they are racist is disgusting. Many precincts in CoA went over 70% Romney.

Romney also won bigger this election than McCain in 2008, so you could say Forsyth is getting more Republican.

Are blacks racist for overwhelmingly voting for Obama?

Of course the Democrat would make it racial.

"According to U.S. Census Bureau, about 28 percent of households that receive food stamps are African American, while 59 percent are white. According to the same report, about 78 percent of American households are white, while about 12 percent are black. (The overall population is 72.4 percent white and 12.6 percent black.)" CBS News

How do figure that 'more business types' moving into a community would make it LESS Republican? I would consider the opposite to be true. With their aggressive tax policy and stifling regulatory environment, the Dems are hardly the darlings of the business community.

The short answer: There aren't many apartments in Forsyth and Cherokee.

The long answer: Since there are few apartments in those counties, the residents much more likely to be homeowners and married than other areas. People who buy a home and get married to raise children tend to be more responsible and plan ahead compared to people who rent monthly and have babies out of wedlock. People who plan ahead in life are much more likely to vote Republican. People who wander through life aimlessly tend to vote Democrat, since that party offers a bigger safety net to people who have made mistakes.
