For what it is worth, I am 2 miles South on the East side.
Just to be fair, most people in Smyrna have no idea what crime is. I live in Smyrna and I own a rental duplex in Atlanta and believe me, there's a distinct difference between the two. Crime for Smyrna is "I left my car door unlocked for the last year and I got a flashlight stolen out of it one day". Well, why'd you leave it unlocked? In Atlanta, it'd get broken into in one day, heck maybe even in a few hours. Or "there was a hold up last month along such-and-such." I feel bad for the victims, but people live in $400k houses in Atlanta in areas where they have to seriously worry about being mugged if they are out after dark or even sometimes during the day. Smyrna is a paradise for a dense urban area (3,200/sq mi).

I'm being cynical, but it's not far from the truth. E.g. there's no cages on A/Cs in North Smyrna, and bars on houses (except on rare occasions). Most of the crime map in Smyrna is misdemeanor stuff. We have aggressive policing. Most things reported on the news as happening in "Smyrna" actually are outside city limits.

Yes, it's an urban area and you shouldn't be stupid about what you do at night. And you can be in the wrong place at the wrong time and come across some wacko who's probably not from Smyrna anyway. But all-in-all Smyrna is a very safe place to live, even the Northermost part.
