Atlanta’s Clermont Hotel, a city landmark best known for its bawdy basement lounge, has been sold.
Clermont Hotel Partners LLC, a partnership whose principals include Philip Welker and Ethan Orley, purchased the property on Ponce de Leon Avenue.

They did not release the sales price.

Welker and Orley plan to redevelop the Clermont as a boutique hotel. While the hotel's strip club — the oldest in Atlanta that often attracts big-name celebrities — won’t see immediate changes, its future will become clear once Welker and Orley solidify their redevelopment plans.

Well this is just the worst possible news for the heart and soul of the sketchy east side.

Cool. Glad it's moving forward. Driving by and seeing the empty shell of a building made me wonder what was up with the project.

The design sounds interesting:

The hotel will be designed to appeal to the “creative traveler,” Welker said.

It will have a “layered” design, he said, meaning each area will feel as it evolved over time. For example, the bar will draw inspiration from an interior in Cuba getting remade during the 1970s. The lobby and rooms will start with finishes from the 1920s and layer in paint, carpet and furniture from decades that followed.

The zoning for the property requires that the current 38 parking spaces be increased to 185 parking spaces for the proposed use. Yet another example of Atlanta's HORRIBLE parking requirements. Do that many people really drive to a hotel? Almost every time I've stayed in a hotel, I get there via Uber or Public Transportation. People don't like to drive on vacation. I can imagine residents in the neighborhood behind the hotel would be concerned about traffic increases, since there is space for another 147 private vehicles going in.

Wow. Yes, that is terrible. Are they really adding 147 new spaces? (I don't have a subscription)

Somebody linked this earlier, but now I can't find where it was. But it is in the Application for Special Use Permit for NPU F. Here is the link with all of the details:

Ah thanks. Yes, it should be no surprise existing buildings don't get re-used (or that there is limited affordable options with new construction) when you have to drop big bucks to build parking structures to meet parking minimums.

So, it's been closed since 2009?
