Any advice on whether Fayetteville is a good option for a growing family? We're young professionals, early 30s, African American with a 3 year old child. Looking for a safe community near the Atlanta metro area, good schools are very important to us. Our budget is around $300k. Other considerations are proximity to stores, entertainment etc., although we don't mind venturing into the city for nights out.

Community wise, we're very open minded. Prefer to avoid homogenous neighborhoods where we'd feel out of place, as well as areas where crime is a problem. Otherwise, just looking for friendly neighbors, race is definitely not an issue for us.

Also, we're considering a new construction home - not sure what the availability of land is like (in a desirable location), so any info would be appreciated.

Thanks for your help!

Other than Fayetteville being really hard to get to and from bc it's not really close to any major interstate, I think it fits your criteria very well. It has a little bit of an old south feel (to me) but if you are ok with that, I think it fits well with what the criteria that you listed for a home/neighborhood.

ETA: Due to the fact that I've been hearing that gang problems have caused crime issus in Riverdale, which is next door to the northernmost/Clayton County part of Fayetteville, and bc schools in Fayette county are much, much better than schools in Clayton County, I would recommend the Fayette county part of Fayetteville - away from Riverdale (for safety and schools). There are lots of threads on Fayetteville (some under Fayetteville and some under Peachtree City) so searching could be uselful to you.

Fayetteville is perfect for you! Everything you're looking for and then some. Strong sense of community. Lots of history. Good schools. Tons of retail. Low crime. Close to airport. Plenty of housing options (new homes are being built again!). Mostly middle- to upper-middle class 2-parent families, including many AA professionals seeking a better life for their kids. Suprisingly diverse in fact -- Fayette County has gone from being nearly all white to a having a healthy mix in the past 10 years or so.
