Georgia does have this dysfunctional County pretending to be a city system. You have the county and cities suing each other in Gwinnet. You have the failed County in Dekalb. Georgia needs to get out of the 19th century. Its ridiculous to have urban areas 6 or 7 miles from downtown of one of the 12 largest metro areas in the country unincorporated.

People need to be free to form cities. Now I don't like the Lakeside concept. It looks like an attempt to eventually form its own school district if they can get the constitution changed. Futher, they are taking the commercial areas of Tucker and commerical areas north of I-85. And they are leaving a couple of small potential cities inside their area.

What would make more sense would be a larger city bound by I-85 on the north (leaving north of I-85 to Chamblee), I-285 on the east and Avondale, Decatur and Atlanta to the South and West. Or possibly including all of Tucker as well if they were interested.

There should be more cities, just not boutique cities. And some areas make more sense as part of Atlanta or Decatur.

What doesn't make sense is a county pretending to be a city and wasting money suing its own residents.

Just looked up cities by area in GA:

City - Total area (sq*mi) - Population (2010)
Augusta - 306.7 - 195,844
Cusseta - 251.2 - ~1,200
Columbus - 221 - 189,885
Atlanta - 134 - 420,003
Athens - 118.2 - 115,452
Savannah - 78.1 - 136,286

Edit: appologies for the formatting.

I agree with the above comments. Existing cities in the Atlanta area should annex more.

You do realize that every city here outside of Atlanta and Savannah have consolidated with their county, don't you? Macon will be higher up this list now that it has consolidated with Bibb County.

Yes, I think Macon's pop is around 155,000-156,000 now.

Yea, that is why cities like "Cusseta" make the list. I support city-county consolidation.

Cusseta merged with Chattahoochee County sometime this past decade. It is the county directly south of Columbus, about half of the county is part of Fort Benning. There is a lot of fluctuation in its population due to transient military personnel.
