"MARTA this week issued a request for qualifications from developers interested in the projects, which could include a mix of apartments, student housing and condos, but also stores and office buildings.

The timing of the project seems sound. Momentum for transit-oriented projects has never been stronger, many developers say.

It stems from Atlanta’s young professionals, part of the broader demographic known as Generation Y, that prefer living in walkable neighborhoods close to job centers and amenities such as restaurants, shopping and entertainment..."

Here's an interesting study by a couple of Georgia State profs who found that MARTA isn't a boost to local development or population.

However, I wonder if they'd reach the same conclusions today?

Quote:
Two conclusions can be drawn from the results of this study. First,
MARTA has had neither a positive nor a negative impact on total
population and total employment in station areas. Second, MARTA has
altered the composition of employment in favor of the public sector, but
only in those areas with high levels of commercial activity.
