Here are state’s AP merit schools: 20 percent of students took AP exams; half or more exams earned 3 or higher | Get Schooled

AP exam participation and pass-rates are excellent metrics for parents wanting to find more competitive high schools for their children. Fulton county had the highest representation, followed by Gwinnett and then Cobb. Several other GA high schools made the list.

Congrats to Georgia’s AP Merit Schools, which are high schools with at least 20 percent of the student population taking AP exams and at least half of all AP exams earning scores of three or higher.

Special shoutout to Fulton (9), Gwinnett (9) and Cobb (8) for having so many high schools on the list.

Good job!

No real surprises on, or left off, this list for the folks who keep tabs on the local public schools.

Georgia also ranks 12th in the nation for students passing the exam. The AP exam is scored out of 5, a 3 being a passing grade. The trend is on the upswing. Only five other states in the country had a greater percentage of AP exam takers last year. The percentage of Georgia seniors who took an AP exam was 41.1%, compared to 32.4% for the nation.

When results are broken out by subgroup, Georgia’s African-American students rank 2nd in the nation (behind Washington D.C.) in the percentage of seniors scoring a 3 or higher on AP exams. Georgia’s 10-year increase (10.1%) in the percentage of seniors scoring a 3 or higher on AP exams also shows impressive results, ranking 9th in the nation.

Georgia ranks 12th in nation in seniors passing AP exams. Continues to chart improvement and growth. | Get Schooled

Just like our universities, Georgia students are getting better and better.

Well, there isn't exactly a lot of room for them to get worse.

That's not true. Trust me. K-12 needs some work. We have isolated pockets of fantastic, nationally acclaimed schools in a sea of not-so-great. (i.e. DeKalb and Clayton)

However, our students are overrepresented at the top.

I will have to disagree. The very top students aren't representative of the whole... by definition they are outliers. Test scores and placement tests tell a very different story (and you know it).

I'm also basing my opinion on my years of interaction with students from about a dozen or so high schools in the north atl metro area. The vast majority of whom were less learned than I was in their grade.... though I will admit that I was in a very very very good school system at that age (Fairfax Co).

"BERKMAR HIGH SCHOOL GWINNETT COUNTY"

Most impressive find.

Reading stuff like this makes me even more worried about GSU. You mean to tell me that GA schools are getting better, and every other USG and private institution in GA saw increased GPA and SAT..but GSU saw its second year of a drop? Fail whale is wailing.

One thing that should be noted is some counties help pay for AP testing and highly encourage it, while many counties any Georgia can not.

Gwinnett (and probably Cobb and most of the northern suburbs) are included in this.

This helps pass the 20% threshold easier.

Nonetheless, a sign of good school systems.
