in need of african american resources near cumming, ga
Hello all,
My husband and I are a black couple that relocated to Cumming from Los Angeles a few weeks ago. We are staying with friends until we decide what area to build a home in. In the meantime, we are in dire need of finding a good church, barber, and hairstylist. We don't want to have to drive downtown, so hopefully someone can suggest something not more than a 20-30 minute drive. Thanks in advance!

Though you may find a church in Cumming with one or two Black faces, that's about all you should expect. Sadly, this is the South and people (have made the conscious decision to still) worship separately.
You might get lucky and find a men's barber shop in nearby Alpharetta, but don't count on finding one in Cumming. For ladies, well ... you might be able to find someone who can trim the ends, but for styling? Again, chances are slim to none.
I'm sure you'll find many nice folks up that way; it's becoming more the relocation spot for transplants. But for some of the everyday cultural needs, you'll probably have to drive a ways.

You won't find anything like that in Forsyth County. There are a few- very few- black people there. Not enough to support services like that. Forsyth has historically been hostile to non whites although it has quieted down in recent years as northern whites who are more tolerant have largely replaced the native whites who occupied that area in the past.

I live in Cumming. I have several friends who live in Suwanee which is VERY close by. My whole family moved from Fl and MA and now live in Cumming. I have several black friends in the community also. I know where to get my hair/nails done. I go to a church that I find wonderful although we are a few pepper sprinkles in a sea of salt. The black community is growing fast. I used to be on of the few at the supermarket, now I am one of many. We had to adjust our comfort zone and not be suspicious of people being TOO friendly. I also know places to get my ethnic foods (I am Haitian and my husband is Jamaican) from nearby farmer's market. Just email me, I'll be glad to help you further.

I know of a Hair Salon in Cumming, GA catering to various ethnicities.
Contact Natalie at Simply U Beauty Salon - 678-456-9022. (Located 2 miles from downtown Cumming, GA.)
I ran into this post when trying to find a salon for my daughter (bi-racial) to have her hair relaxed and not more than a week later saw Simply U advertised in the "Up In Cumming" newsletter publication. The gals there are very sweet and did a great job on my daughters hair.

Can you point out a place in this country where blacks and whites worship together? Other than maybe New York and San Francisco, where is this mythical, wonderfully diverse place where all races and ethnicities interact in harmony? Segregation isn't just in the south, and in fact, metro Atlanta is one of the least segregated areas I have ever seen, Forsyth county being the exception as it has only recently become more diverse. My diverse neighborhood would not even exist in most places up north, including Cleveland, Detroit, and other northern cities.

We moved here from LA nine years ago we are a black family. I do not know if you have done in research on Fosyth county we live in Woodstock. We are moving to San Franciscon in a few months.
If you do not have children problems are minimal. Racism is present in North Georgia, less inside the perimeter.
Trendsetters in Canton Georgia is great. Ask for Stacie she is an excellent stylist.

Black Hair Dresser in Cumming, Ga
My name is Nadine and I am an Afro-American Stylist in cumming. My sister has lived in Cumming for over seven years and I have for two years. Cumming is a place you have to come and experience for yourself. The schools here are great and the town is still growing and their are definitely more that two black people living here.(lol) Come and experience our town before judging through someone else.
Be Blessed.
