Many people who do not commute to Atlanta, enjoy the quiet, gorgeous countryside. However, if you want to be closer to Atlanta, I would highly recommend Buckhead or PeachTree City. What type of home are you seeking? Townhome, Condo, Single family? What amenities are you interestd in, golfing, etc? These are all things to consider. Have you contacted a realtor? If I can be of any additional help, please feel free to contact me. We too relocated to Atlanta, and just love it, plus, it is being touted as one of the best places in the country to purchase. |

We are more like Andy Griffith here. I agree Bob, you find 6 figure folks everywhere. You can choose Sugarloaf or Dacula. I prefer the latter since I like everything I own paid for. Thus my "own" comment. Sugarloaf and Country Club of the South. Hmmm, that reminds me. Isn't that where the TI felon, Michael "The Dog Figher Vick" and the brothels located? Goes to show you can live in "high dollar" areas and still have issues. My advice is to look all over, take a few days to find a location that appeals to you, drive it a few times during rush hour, cruise the neighborhood on a Friday late night, watch the School Bus, etc., then you will have a good idea. Don't worry about the incomes, considering beauty is only skin deep, I could take you to many 6 figure incomes only to find folks who are so deep in debt that they are actually worse off than Junior Samples down the road with his small house that would give you the shirt off his back.

Thanks to everyone who posted with info. We'll be working downtown so Marta connections would be helpful. I'm thinking new construction with about 2500 to 3000 SF plus a basement. We plan to look in the $450k to 650k price range. We're not opposed to a child friendly neighborhood but probably won't look in areas billed as family centered. Hope this helps.

Your requirement being 2500+ SF new develeopment for 450k to 650k, you are already priced out of many intown and some suburban pockets. You are basically looking at a decent white collar neighborhood that is some drive away from downtown, like Smyrna to the north and East Atlanta (which is much closer to downtown). Any middle manager at a fortune 1000 company makes 6 figures these days. All we really need to help you out is your budget.

You can still find plenty of nice homes inside the perimeter in your price range. You'll need to drive around different areas to see what appeals to you most. Personally, I'm a native of the north east intown area (Emory University area) and I'm quite partial to it, since I think it's the prettiest part of the city. On this side of town you might like the City of Decatur -- very Mayberry-ish with concerts on the courthouse square, cute shops, nice restaurants, and a MARTA rail station in the center of town. There's also the Oak Grove area. While $450-650k won't buy you new construction in Oak Grove, you can find a nice older house with a basement in the area.
On the Westside (which is very popular at the moment and undergoing a lot of building) you might look at Underwood Hills. They don't have a MARTA station, but they are on I-75 and have quick access to Downtown, Midtown & Buckhead. Your price range will limit you somewhat as far as new construction inside the perimeter, but you'll certainly be able to find a wide range of homes, particularly if you are willing to look at renovated older homes. If you can stand the commute, you'll get more house for your money outside the perimeter but you'll also get a more suburban lifestyle. |

Don't forget to consider South in areas like Fayetteville, Peachtree City, Tyrone etc. Very nice custom homes in peaceful communities down there.
