So my daughter is seriously considering Spelman. We recently visited and loved the campus and already loved what they offered. I would like to know what the natives think about the college kids and the surrounding area?

She'll be on campus for now but I know for sure she'll want to live off campus within the next few yrs. We're originally from the Los Angeles area so she's used to city life. After moving to Fredericksburg, va because of dads job she has been missing so much of what she saw again in ATL.! So yes she's very excited...me, I'm excited and a little nervous because I know nothing about the area I know she'll be exploring and her closest family is 10 hrs away....well she reminded me she has an aunt in Orlando but that's not too close either.

The area around Spelman/Morehouse is a bit worn on the edges, and perhaps a bit rough.

I have a cousin at Morehouse in the dorms and he usually opts to get rides from family or friends instead of walking to the MARTA stops/stations.

The area has serious potential. Repave a few streets and enforce a few ordinances regarding maintaining the homes and junk in the front yards and the blocks immediately around campus would be very nice.

I will put it this way. Niether Ga Tech, nor Emory, nor Ga State have manned security gates for getting cars on and off campus. The AUC does.

Hello - Spelman alumna here - class of 1999.

The immediate Spelman campus is very safe - as mentioned above, the campus is gated and very tightly patrolled.

The area surrounding the school (when I was there) wasn't the greatest, though. I have been away from Atlanta now for almost three years, so I'm not sure if it's changed or not.

Spelman is a great school though, and definitely worth the experience.

Feel free to PM me with any questions you have!
