I came across this article just now:
To Fight Gridlock, Los Angeles Synchronizes Every Red Light

I would LOVE to see the city of Atlanta do this, especially given the horrid commute I had home last night. The initial stats according to the article say that the average commute time has only gone from 20ish minutes to 17ish minutes, but, if I'm reading right, that's still a decrease of about 20%.

Traffic lights get out of sync. If no one reports the out of sync lights, then how is anyone to know to fix it.

Midtown Alliance has a grant to do just this in Midtown, not sure about other parts of the metro.

Does it really need to get reported? I would think this would almost be a given if you even come close to the city.

"Now, the magnetic sensors in the road at every intersection send real-time updates about the traffic flow through fiber-optic cables to a bunker beneath downtown Los Angeles, where Edward Yu runs the network. The computer system, which runs software the city itself developed, analyzes the data and automatically makes second-by-second adjustments, adapting to changing conditions and using a trove of past data to predict where traffic could snarl, all without human involvement."

It is a fantastic idea but will never happen here. The northern suburbs are so backwards and cheap that they do not even have adequate street lights! The thought of a sophisticated computer controlled traffic system on the narrow two lane roads around the Atlanta metro is just fantasy.

Well before we go down that path, we should first wait and see if this is actually successful. My bet is that it will not be. Take Manhattan for instance, which has synchronized lights throughout the whole burrough, there's plenty of congestion there.

Our lights really do need better synchronization. Just extending or shortening some would move traffic exponentially.

I'd frankly be more interested in slowing traffic down than speeding it up, at least in the more densely populated areas of metro Atlanta.

Yes there are thousands of lights around the metro. State takes care of those on state roads and freeway interchanges. County does intersections in unincorporated, and Atlanta takes care of secondary streets.

We have these on the southside. Hwy 85 and 19/41 are all synced very well at rush hours.
