We have free mulch available in our little town. However, you have to load it and unload it yourself. My husband and I are elderly and do not have a truck. One of our neighbors offered her truck and 15-year old grandson to do the load and unloading for two small truck loads for us, as well as the spreading. The boy does not have parents.

When I asked how much I should pay him, she replied that I should not because he needs to learn to do this as a labor of love for a neighbor. Much as I would appreciate the gesture, I know it’s hard work and I feel obligated to give him something. Any suggestions?

I would pay migrant workers at least $10 an hour to do a job like this. So I think $10 an hour is probably also fair for a 15 year old.

I agree, too! He will like that but will probably feel just as good about seeing the smile on your face.

10 makes sense for me. Too bad he is not driving age yet - you could always give him a gas card rather than cash.
