Smile Discipline codes

Can anyone tell me if using physical exercise can be utilized as a form of punishment in elementary schools or at any school level? Thanks, a Gwinnett County mom.

Let's put it this way- it's not listed in the published disciplinary code that I read through online (something you should do....). I'd meet with the principal to discuss the issue, and if he says it's an acceptable form of discipline, have him show you where that's written.

Only for gym class as far as I know. The coach may use it by making you run laps or do pushups but as far as I have ever heard it is not used during the rest of the school day.

Some schools are "allowed" to abuse children in this way, but as parents, we have to ensure than schools not treat our children's bodies with disrespect. Discipline(or guidance) should never have the potential to cause pain, or death. Southern schools are notorious for being punitive towards children(most paddling in the country occurs in southern schools), and the children respond in kind by being some of the countries most un-disciplined(meaning, they refuse to take "guidance" from tyrants and so are left without positive models and fail to reach emotional maturity). I would never allow any adult or system to put their hands on my child in anyway that was undesirable for any reason, or to force him into physical or emotional positions in which he was disempowered.

HUH? Corporal punishment (paddling) is not permitted in Georgia.

I have not heard of any instance outside of gym class or sports where physical exercise was used as punishment. I can't imagine that any school principal would support that. They have written guidelines to follow for discipline.

Making a kid run a few laps or do pushups is NOT "abuse*. It is a form of positive discipline and, from the looks of some of the fat ass kids I see, they could use it. I think it is far more abusive to feed your kids hamburgers and ice cream everyday to the point where they are rolling out of the school door like a butterball in the afternoon.

Just as an FYI, I recently made the inquiry at a PTA meeting and was told by the Principal that if I had any questions I should speak with the teacher. If I didn't like what the teacher had to say then I should get with the assistant principal. I believe in discipline, however to send home a written disciplinary policy stating one thing, but actually enforcing running laps is something else. It is not only an act of omission from the written code, it is a deliberate way of trying to hide something. Thanks for the responses.

got spanked myself when I was in elementary...think they went away with that in the late 80's b/c I never got spanked again and I should have been.....

...when I grew up we also had 'switches', they're way worse than paddles.....think it worked out good. When I have children, I'll be sure to spank the **** out of them, even if I'm in public.
