AtlJan: Btw, I checked the USNews rankings for Georgia, and Campbell High is ranked before any Atlanta High School, #33 in the state. So Vinings/Smyrna is still a better choice, in my opinion, even when only considering education and ignoring cost of living differences. Additionally, at least half the schools ranked higher than Campbell are in Cobb County or Gwinnett, with a magnet or charter school in Gwinnett being #3 in the nation. Apparently, magnet schools have been knocking conventional high schools back in rankings nationwide, I'm guessing because some of them hand-pick students since they have such long waiting lists and have to justify taking certain students. My high school alma-mater in Connecticut has dropped to around #1000 nationwide from around #400 when I went there and Campbell is a bit behind that, even if it's still one of the best high schools in GA and better than anything in Atlanta schools. Still, very respectable rankings and I'm planning on having my daughter in IB, which will be a top-notch education even above the great education Campbell provides.

However, you are right that the quality of education still depends a lot on the student (and the parents). Community/school probably comes third. However, a leg-up never hurts.

Well, in true Vinings, the area the OP likes, I would like to compare numbers of children going to private school vs public middle and high school. I am guessing there are about 5 private to 1 public. Almost all the kids there go to Lovett, Westminster, Pace, Whitefield and HIES. I am sure Campbell is a fine place, but it is not the reason people buy houses in Vinings.
