Maybe that is a conspiracy to keep white people out of Atlanta!!!Do you have a problem with thugs in/around the city or just the crime rates in general? If you don't feel safe in your general area then that is a personal problem, if you are just ranting on criminals in general then that is another thing.
I have not had a problem with crime in Atlanta since i have been here. Looking to move In town within ten years. For personal safety:
Walk in groups, Don't walk alone after dark, don't wander around aimlessly have some idea were you are going, keep something immediate with you, pepper spray, 50$ stun gun, a staff, take taxies to marta stations or just learn how to drive around the city well, learn how to fight at least a little bit. To secure your home consider:
sturdier doors, security systems, reinforced windows, try a guard dog, keep something immediate near your bed like a baseball bat, keep a phone nearby and reconsider housing options.
You have to take precautions for your own safety, don't expect the city to do it for you, don't expect things to change that much. Just don't make yourself and easy target for thugs.
But to address the problem why thugs exist in atlanta, I have no idea, I don't study criminology! They exist everywhere though it dosn't matter what type of music people listen to. Atlanta had problems with crime long before it became a hip hop mecca in the 2000s, and African Americans, we have had problems with crime long before hip hop became mainstream in the 80s and 90s. Art mimicks real life, and art rarley cause social changes, cultural changes unless your are da vinci.
Inner City crime has always been harder to control than that of crime in rural areas, the criminals are better orginizeds, the have accessibility, the police officers come from the some neighborhoods as the criminals, low pay, ill equiped to control a large city as apposed to a 1,000 person city. You can't compare crime operations to those that happen in say valdosta to atlanta. People with criminal backgrounds are driven to cities, poor people are more driven to cities also, for the same reason college grads come.
For example I have occasionally had the chance to talk to some of the working class in atlanta and lots of the same they took a bus or a norfolk southern train to the city after they lost jobs and needed transportation. Thats how some people judge cities how well the support the working class, and the infastructure is there to support those people. Historically proverty and Crime has always been the trademark of cities. Atlanta is a big city with crime problems, but other cities that are considered big with crime problems are much much smaller than atlanta, and i think crime grows expanetional with population. It is getting much better though, right now atlanta has a shackey job market, plus real-estate market. Comparing to atlanta to cities such as San franscisco, New York, Sacremento, san diego, san antonio, austin isn't to fair!!!
