Basic math from this one statement says that becoming part of a city, whether it be a new city of Briarcliff or annexation into Atlanta, the folks are 2-1 in favor of NOT being part of unincorporated DeKalb. Looks like more change to the map is a comin'.

It seems fate has a hold on Atlanta. For years folks complained that while Atlanta may be one of the largest if the largest soon MSA in the south, cities like Charlotte and Jacksonville have larger city populations. Atlanta has only to sit and wait as unincorporated areas of DeKalb County are asking to join. It will be interesting to see how many more areas join the city.

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. The city of Lakeside (which just held another meeting yesterday) is farther a head in the cityhood process having already raised and completed the $50K cityhood study. The city of Briarcliff has not raised the money for the study yet. "Lakeside" overlays much of the same area but does not include Druid Hills. "Briarcliff" does. Druid Hills feels more a part of Atlanta to me and would be a welcome addition to the city. I think their addition could help accelerate some of the positive changes Atlanta has been going through.

Sounds like Briarcliff has now paid for the needed study: Briarcliff organizers to hold meeting | www.ajc.com

The dueling cityhood proposals continue! Oh the drama!

If it comes down to the two of these, please, please residents of central DeKalb, go with Briarcliff if for no other reason than the name. What lake is there to be beside, Lakeside?

There is "Echo Lake" but it is barely a pond. I agree with the "Lakeside" boundaries more as a more coherent city than the "Briarcliff" boundaries. However as someone that grew up in the area and went to Lakeside High School, I agree that it is a terrible city name.

If there are to be newly incorporated cities, there should definitely not be a City of Lakeside.

The cities should be the City of Briarcliff and the City of Tucker.

Please see the map below:

What I cannot believe is the proposed City of Lakeside taking in half of "Tucker." What?

Now, I really think that Druid Hills should just be annexed by the City of Atlanta. Maybe even most of the proposed City of Briarcliff should also be annexed by the CoA. Decatur and Avondale Estates could annex some of the area as well.
The City of Tucker should incorporate, however.

The Lakeside organizers are trying to include the entire school district. (Which is illogical given that, currently, no new school systems are allowed in GA) Evansdale has been zoned to Lakeside forever. IT is very political and very touchy.

The last few rounds of redistricting (proposed, anyway) have moved Evansdale to Tucker but push back has been major. I do believe that many of the current parents are somewhat resigned to the inevitably of that happening, because the system needs to push students south to fill spaces.

Anyway, that is part of the story. I think the commercial development they are taking is the other part.
