Is Fairburn Georgia a good place to live?
We were told that Fairburn is a good area to look at for diversity. We are considering moving from Cherokee County, which lacks diversity and just a little more of a rural area than we would like. We are a african american family, native from NYC. Been here about 2 years.
Is Fairburn diverse with a good mixture of people. We moved from the suburbs of NYC (Teaneck, NJ) and it has been hard to find a neighborhood that is well mixed with white, black, asian, latino, etc that has good public schools, affordable beautiful communites with ammenities, LOW CRIME, great shopping and eateries with lots of kids elementary and middle school age. We want our neighbors to be some of everyone not just black or just white.
We are also considering Alpharetta, great area with almost all that we are looking for, but it is not that diverse and prices are high for homes. Any suggestions except Dekalb and Gwinett Counties. It seems in the Atlanta Metro area it is either all white or all black no in between. Especially if you start with the public schools. The best public schools seem to be in the all white suburban areas, Why ?

There are a lot great schools that are not all white and suburban. You have to look beyond the surface. Think a little bit. Why are many people in Atlanta calling them the so-called "best public schools???"
Because they are all white.
Understand my point?
Metro Atlanta is full of people proclaiming "best school" , "bad school", etc. They are basing everything on race.
Great school districts with the diversity you crave...here we go (I going to list the high schools only...you can locate the great middle/elementary schools by determining which schools feed into the high schools...think of the high school districts as "towns".):
1. Marietta High School (Marietta City...in Cobb)
2. Wheeler High School (Cobb)
3. Sprayberry High School (Cobb)
4. Campbell High School (Cobb)
5. South Cobb High School (Cobb)
6. North Springs High School (Fulton)
7. Riverwood High School (Fulton)
8. Centennial High School (Fulton)
9. Dunwoody High School (DeKalb)
10. Lakeside High School (DeKalb)
11. Tucker High School (DeKalb)
12. Norcross High School (Gwinnett)
13. Duluth High School (Gwinnett)
14. Berkmar High School (Gwinnett)
15. Sandy Creek High School (Fayette)
16. Tri-Cities High School (Fulton)
17. North Atlanta High School (Atlanta City...in Fulton)
18. Chamblee High School (DeKalb)
19. North Cobb High School (Cobb)
Good Luck!

Fayette county sounds close to what you may be looking for. Go to greatschools.net and look at the stats and the parent comments for the schools that feed into SCHS - Sandy Creek High School.

Also, since your are already in Cherokee County, I highly recommend Marietta High, Wheeler High, Sprayberry High, North Cobb High, and Campbell High...they are all in Cobb County, closer to where y'all are now. The search for a new home/neighborhood will be easier and you won't have far to go if y'all decide to move.
All great schools. Marietta is its own separate school system, very strong community support, with IB program and other innovative programs. Wheeler has a nationally known/recognized Math/Science/Engineering/Robotics Magnet and a strong community. Sprayberry has a strong, unpretentious community with great academics. North Cobb has the only Social Science/Studies Magnet in the Metro Area (maybe the entire state). Campbell (Julia Roberts's alma mater!) has a top-notch IB Magnet program.
Hope this helps even more.

It sounds like you might be happy in the area of Lithonia.

I don't think you'd be happy in Lithonia. The schools public schools are currently underachieving, and will get worse before they get better. The poster who suggested it probably knows this.
Smp4180, you might want to seriously consider Gwinnett County (Duluth, Suwanee, Peachtree Corners). We wanted a nice, enjoyable, attractive community with high-achieving schools, low crime and diverse people. We have that in Gwinnett.
One thing you will notice in these "diversity" threads is that people who raise the issue of lack-of-diversity are rarely agreed with by people who already live in those non-diverse communities.
edit:
I have an aunt in Fairburn. It's OK, but the schools are mediocre at best, and crime can be high in places. It's majority Black and Latino, and mostly working class. In other words, it's more of the same "South Side" stuff, for the most part.

What's the Real Deal With Fairburn, Georgia?
We are relocating to Fairburn, Ga. I would like to know how far will we have to drive to go to grocery stores like Walmart, Sam's Club and are there any family restaurants in Fairburn?
The children will be attending private school. However, what activities are there for highschool teenagers? Where are the hangouts for sports, dance, theater?
What type of neighborhood is Cedar Grove Road in the 9300 hundred block? Diverse? One race??
We are an African American Family and we love people of all colors. We hope we can find a diverse area.
Thanks for your help.

Reason: 9600 block of Cedar Grove Road, not 9300
