Is it legal to make a left on red onto a one way street? This light by my place stays red for like 5 entire minutes and traffic gets backed up pretty bad. I was first in line today and two taxis passed me across the double yellow and then turned. Then some guy started honking at me and I didn't know if it was because the light was taking so long or if left on red is permitted here. Anyone know?

Even if the street I'm on isn't a one way street? That just seems unsafe

That would be illegal. Just like when turning right on red, you must be able to stay in the lane closest to the curb through the whole turn. That isn't possible if either street is two way.

Yes it is allowed from a one-way to a one-way. 40-6-21 (a)(3)(D):

Quote:
Traffic, except pedestrians, facing a steady CIRCULAR RED signal, after stopping as provided in subparagraph (A) of this paragraph, may make a left turn from the left-hand lane of a one-way street onto a one-way street on which the traffic moves toward the driver's left but shall stop and remain stopped for pedestrians and yield the right of way to other traffic proceeding as directed by the signal at such intersection. Such vehicular traffic shall not make a left turn against a steady CIRCULAR RED signal at any intersection where a sign is erected prohibiting such left turn;
For example, from Spring St. on to Baker St.
