Just FYI.....

Citizens of Gwinnett county have voted to continue to tax ourselves 1% for the next 3 years. For this version of SPLOST, 70% of the funds are earmarked for transportation projects (at least in Duluth, but I'm pretty sure that is mirrored by all the cities who will receive a portion of the funds)

So you can blame the suburbs all you want for being short-sighted and defeating the T-SPLOST. This is just more proof that the T-SPLOST was not voted down because suburbanites are anti-transportation. It was simply the wrong bill at the wrong time that did the wrong things.

Our SPLOST will raise almost $500 million in 3 years and will stay within the county, funding projects that the county cares about. Within the city of Duluth, much of the transportation funds will be used to build new bike paths and greenways, and the project I'm most excited about is the restoration of Rogers Bridge. Creating a pedestrian and bike path on this old steel truss bridge will do lot to literally bridge the gap between Duluth and Johns Creek and connect our paths. I hope it makes the final cut of projects to receive funding.

I'm sure a good deal of the non-transportation funds will go to ensure that our world class park system stays that way.

Even though I'm generally against increasing taxes (even though in this case, it's a renewal of an existing tax set to expire), there are definitely times when taxes measurably improve quality of life and are well worth it. I like SPLOST taxes because they have set expiration dates and voters get regular intervals to stop funding if they don't think the government is being a good steward of the tax dollars. This is only a 3 year SPLOST.

Good job, Gwinnett. The fine voters once again voted for a better quality of life.

The SPLOST was also renewed in Chatham County, which also voted down the T-Splost last year. Among other things, the $370 million will go to build a new sports arena in Savannah and upgrade roads, bridges and highways throughout the county.

Not anti-transportation, just anti-transit. How much of that $500M is going towards transit?

Zero so they are still going to have mega traffic problems on I-85 and the HOT lanes' costs peaking higher and higher every year.

Well, I do wish that transit would happen soon, but that's going to require a plan with a much longer horizon than 3 years.

I think it will come SOME DAY, but I'll probably be dead and buried by then. In the meantime, alternative transportation like bike paths and traditional road improvements are still things to look forward to.

And to be fair, T-SPLOST didn't do anything to bring transit to the suburban areas either.

FWIW, this is Gwinnett. Not the entirety of the T-SPLOST region. Not exactly the same animal.
