I was wondering what y'all thought about the need for gutters on a house here in Atlanta. I've been doing some research, but obviously gutter companies say they are needed, and there is not much saying they are not needed. Thought i would ask for a couple of informed opinions here. Here is my situation:

I have gutters around the whole house. I am only considering taking them off of one side of the house (shotgun house, so the side is the long side). Reason being, there is an extremely large pecan tree on that side of the house. In spring it drops a huge amount if strings of pollen that clog them up, in fall it drops leaves that clog them up, and in winter it drops pecans that clog them up. Basically, every season there is something to clog the gutter under the tree, which eventually gets weighed down and pulled from the house. It's constant maintenance. I'm afraid gutter guards won't work, mainly because of the pollen strings in the spring that can fit into anything and i cant clean the gutters with the guards there. The roof is pitched at a steep angle, mostly towards the sides of the house (where the gutter would be removed). The constant mess with the gutters is causing the facia to rot, which needs to be replaced (in addition to multiple squirrel holes ).

I live in Grant Park, and have noticed that only 1 other house out of the 6 directly around me has gutters. Very few in this neighborhood as a whole have gutters. So, are they needed? That would make me think they are not needed (these old houses are still around!), but google searches say different. What are your thoughts/experience with this?

Thanks for your help!

There was a wonderful writer for the AJC, Lee May. He retired and moved to Connecticut but just recently moved back to Atlanta!

He hates gutters and had them removed from his new home in Marietta

Thank you, Lori! Glad to see in writing somebody else with experience taking gutters off and not regretting it.

I used to think gutters were mostly useless until I had a home with a basement that would flood from the subterranean walls. They might be a pain in the tuchus to maintain, but not nearly as painful as a perpetually moist basement.

I have a crawl space, so I'm wondering if that would happen I've read up on that possibility, but the land also slopes slightly away from the house. Hmmmm
