As Aaron Murray heads out, Class of 2014 is beginning to shape up!

--

That celebratory shouting: 7,500 high school seniors learning... | Get Schooled | www.ajc.com

12,000 this year as opposed to 10,000 last year. Application trends are down nationally as the college-going population shrinks ever so slightly.

"Similar to last year, those offered admission at this point are academically superior with an average GPA of almost 4.0, a mean SAT of 1355 (with a mean SAT writing score greater than 650), or a mean ACT of 30. UGA requires students to submit writing scores for their ACT and SAT tests; those scores are an integral part of the selection process, McDuff said. Those students admitted through early action also took an average of seven advanced placement or international baccalaureate classes."

UGA and Tech are both doing well. I wonder how Emory will fare after all their scandals. I expect KSU/SPSU apps to continue their increase given the merger. GRU should receive a few more apps, but it's irrelevant to most of us in metro Atlanta. GSU will probably continue the trend of the same numbers or mildly increase with population growth. GSU's deadline is in like April though. North GA may get more apps due to the merger. Dunno about GCSU, Mercer, HBCUs and other small schools.

I analyzed their spring applicants for spring.

1,824 applications for spring 2013
533 applications for spring 2014

Deadline is December 1st. This number includes first years, transfers, post-baccs, dual enrollment, part-time, transient, non-degree seeking, non-traditionals.

As of today, they have received 4,513 applications for fall 2014.

No kidding. I graduated UGA w/ honors in 94, which was just before the HOPE started. I surely didn't have a 1355 SAT back then.

Remember, SAT scoring (verbal+math) was re-centered starting in mid-1995.

So, a 1335 now (verbal+math) is roughly like getting a 1230-1275 back in the day (pre mid-1995).

And therefore--take your pre mid-1995 score (verbal+math) and add 60-105 points in order to see how your would stack up today.

hasn't that happened more than once? when i took it, the top score was 1600 but they've since added a 3rd section with 2400 being the top. i scored 1300 when i took it and was told that was a decent score but perhaps it wasn't that special after all?

They said it's similar to last year and last year's enrolled SAT average at UGA was 1235. That's a huge drop from the accepted average 1355 so UGA is sort of a "backup school" itself.

And if you adjust for recentering in 1995, the UGA average is about 1135 with accepted scores of about 1255. And on top of all that, those numbers are the average so obviously people score lower and still get in.

I don't know for sure, but are kids doing a lot more test prep these days? Gobs of SAT books out there now such as Princeton Review, Kaplan, and Barron's to name a few.

You're confusing two different things.

If you look at my post above, I specifically added "verbal+math." This means the traditional value of 1600 (800+800). The re-centering of the scoring in the mid-1990s had nothing to do with the adding in of the third section.

Later, a third section was added (writing), making the new total 2400 (800+800+800). However, many colleges/universities do not factor in the writing section (or give it low value). Therefore, you will often still see scores only mentioning the verbal+math scoring...with a total of 1600. Using only the verbal/math section scoring, we can still compare today's scores with scores from the past (keeping in mind the re-centering that happened in the mid-90s).

One more thing--when scores are reported for high schools (around the metro area, for example), they are using all three sections. So, when you see Walton High with an average of ~1800, this means 1800 out of 2400.

^^^^^^
Yes! When I graduated high school in the mid-90s, virtually no one did SAT Prep (only one girl that I knew of in my East Cobb high school).

Nowadays, it is like a rite of passage for all upper-middle/upper class students (and many middle class). Plus, several high schools/school districts have SAT prep classes as an extracurricular course (some that may even happen during the school day).

And from what I remember, in the early to mid 90s, the UGA average was roughly 1050-1105...so the current scores are not that much higher.

I have 2 kids went to Tech and graduated and neither of them took prep for SAT. Third kid will take SAT first time this year. If he does terribly maybe I'd spend money on prep..but my experiene, most will do well without the prep if that stye of testing suits them...and thankfully it suits my kids. And if you score in the top 10% --- you aren't likely to increase your score.

UGA is getting harder and harder to get in -- especially if you are from Gwinnett or Cobb County. It's a lottery with kids that have SAT and GPA scores that exceed many from other areas not getting admitted. They allocate so many spots from those counties and take only the top few. That means other schools in the area are benefiting from getting really great students who don't always move on after their first year (Kennesaw).
