first the downtown store closed and it moved to lenox. that really stunk, but at least it was still called rich's.

then rich's got bought out by macy's. wow, that really blows, but hey, at least the store is still there, and the tree is up on top of it for all to see.

now we've got a fake tree, sitting on the ground?

Macy

this blows. completely. there was something magical about being able to find a tree that large and put it up there, plus the decorations... now it's like anything that remained of the old tradition has dried up.

but i promise, if macy's decides to open a store downtown or midtown and move the tree there... i won't complain. best case scenario, macy's reopens in the old rich's space and they convert the sam nunn federal center into a mall.

worst case scenario?

...this.

They have had 2 or 3 accidents with the tree on the roof. It fell off and damaged cars once. Another time it broke and damaged the front of the building. It is safer on the ground.

And ironically, using an artificial tree is being..."Green".

let's not shoot off fireworks on the 4th, there's too much fire risk and someone could get hurt... streamers are cheaper, anyway.

it just sounds like they needed a better system to hold the tree in place. don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. check out the fake tree on top of northside hospital. whoooo. that's impressive.
anyone can put up a fake tree. there really is nothing special about a fake tree.
a fake tree won't ever look like this, and you can count on that:

the lighting of the tree is a special atlanta tradition... there aren't many other places that do something like this. but fake trees? every shopping mall has one.

I agree a real tree would be nice but it should be on the ground. There is no way to safely guy or support the tree where it was. Everybody that looked at it after the last accident said that it needed to be on the ground so it could be properly guyed. The one on Northside Hospital sits in the middle of the roof and enjoys 360 degree support. The one at Lenox sat in the edge of a corner and could not be supported 360 degrees without running guy wire into the parking lots.

It is a nice tradition and I have enjoyed it when we went but nothing will ever beat this city:

We bit the bullet and bought a really nice artificial tree several years ago. I've owned cars that cost less, but if you average it out over time it makes sense. They don't become a fire hazard and I always hated cutting down a nice tree just to bring it inside and look at it for a few weeks.

Streamers for the 4th of July won't be as entertaining and spectacular.

A fake tree however can be made to look even better than a real one, and the ornaments and lights are just the same. If it weren't for the publicity surrounding it, they probably could have sneaked in a fake tree and no one would have noticed the difference.

i like fake trees, but only when the design accepts being a fake tree. it's when they try to imitate the real trees that i find it stupid. i'm just like, buy a real damn tree if you want a tree that "looks real".

if you're going to get a fake tree, at least have fun with it:
