Citing Cost, City of Atlanta Says MARTA Won

I support bringing in a private contractor. I think MARTA is doing a good job and getting better, but privatization is the way to go to keep costs down and improve customer service. I hope they are still planning to integrate the Breeze card eventually. If needed I suppose they can always be rolled in with MARTA in the future. But it would be difficult to split them out if they combined them from the start.

The city has been plain all along that MARTA would not be operating the streetcar. MARTA is just not set up to run this sort of thing.

Even Portland's streetcars are operated by another entity than MAX. From the beginning, it has been stated that it will be breezecard compatible.

As long as there are free transfers between MARTA and streetcar, I don't see a problem.

What happens if the private contractor can't operate it profitably?

And does this imply MARTA might not be running the Beltline LRT?

There are a variety of private companies that provide operations to transit organizations, right off the top of my head there's Veolia, Keolis, and Bombardier. Not sure I'm completely happy with this unless GRTA ends up running it, but we'll see. I hope either MARTA or GRTA maintains some kind of oversight on this regardless of who is actually operating it.

Sad commentary on a transit agency, no?

Why would MARTA be running the Beltline? Their only experience is with a heavy rail/bus system.

MARTA seems to be on a great tact right now. Just read over the op-ed piece in the AJC, wow.
