Am I right in that the highly contested Walmart (and surrounding stores) will be built directly across the street from Maynard Jackson High School and just to the left of the Enso Apartments? When will construction start? When will it end? And aside from causing horrendous traffic on Glenwood Ave., why will it be so bad? Would it lower property values at Glenwood Park or in Ormewood Park or Grant Park? If so, why?

That's the plan. When will construction start? When and if Jeff Fuqua wins a series of lawsuits. When will it end? Depends on when it starts, but you can count on it being thrown together as quickly and cheaply as humanly possible. And aside from causing horrendous traffic on Glenwood Ave., why will it be so bad? It'll also cause horrendous traffic on Bill Kennedy Way, and worsen traffic on Moreland and Memorial and possibly Boulevard. Also, it will set a precedent that says the Beltline overlay development plan is worthless. Would it lower property values at Glenwood Park or in Ormewood Park or Grant Park? Probably. If so, why? Because nobody wants to live in a neighborhood in which 18 wheelers are constantly driving by making deliveries.

If he loses, he can either change his plan and build something that is consistent with the Beltline overlay, or he can walk away.

The neighborhood is not opposed to a Wal Mart. That might be the single most important fact, and it's also the one that is most commonly misunderstood. They support a development that has less suface parking and is more pedestrian oriented.

There are plenty of people here who have more in-depth knowledge on this issue than I do. Hopefully one of them will chime in.
