Marsha is right on point here. The Johns Creek to Downtown commute can take upwards of an hour or more depending on what time of day you are on the road.

Hello Ansley. Yes, I learned that traffic depends on what time of the day it is. I typically left home at 7:00 AM and try to go back home at 4:40 pm. So, it may take 1 hour each way if I live in Johns Creek? How about Marietta? I can try the traffic, but I have to wait till everybody is back to work (one week later?).....

thank you all, and Happy New Year!

East Cobb would offer the best commute to Downtown Atlanta.

I-75 only backs up north of I-285 during the morning commute. Inside of the perimeter, traffic flows--until the Downtown Connector.

Which part of East Cobb are you considering?

And--in which part of Downtown Atlanta is your place of work?

From what has been posted on this thread so far--all three are great areas, but East Cobb would give commuting advantage.

Go for East Cobb (but give me/us more information).

My husband commutes to downtown from East Cobb (Timber Ridge Elementary zone). It isn't a great commute, but I know many people who do it. We love living here, and are very happy with the schools, amenities, etc.

Thanks Aries and Deacongirl! I work in North Druidhills, very close to exist 89 on I-85. We will see a few properties this weekend, including all the three areas.

North Druid Hills is not Downtown Atlanta.

OK--based on where you work, and what you want in terms of a suburban home/neighborhood/amenities, you should definitely look in the Suwanee/Duluth Area.
Enough said.

Suwanee/Duluth is much better option than Johns Creek, Alpharetta, and East Cobb considering where you work!

Suwanee/Duluth: Great schools, great amenities, decent commute for you down I-85, beautiful homes/neighborhoods at good prices, etc. The area has the same attributes that you desire in Johns Creek/Alpharetta/East Cobb.

Helpful Information for you:

Home

Schools

Look at this map:
GCPS Cluster Boundaries

Search for homes/neighborhoods in the following clusters:

Peachtree Ridge Schools
North Gwinnett Schools
Collins Hill Schools
Duluth Schools

I hope this helps some. Good Luck.

One more thing...a lot of people "not in the know" only mention a few areas when someone from outside of Metro Atlanta asks where to live in suburban Metro Atlanta. They'll often always just say Johns Creek, Alpharetta, and/or East Cobb. They don't realize that there are several areas in Metro Atlanta with similar attributes that would be a much better fit for a given situation (commute, etc.).

Remember this. If you work in/at North Druid Hills, you should be looking up the I-85 corridor if you want good/great suburban living/lifestyle.

Suwanee/Duluth.

Look again at the GCPS Cluster Boundaries link above.

Another, secondary recommendation is the Parkview/Brookwood Area. Excellent schools, great amenities. The commute to your place of work would be ok/decent. (*I added this recommendation because I looked more closely at your place of work on google maps!)

The plus is that you would not have to travel on the interstate. And the commute would be fast until you get to the east end of North Druid Hills Road. Then you would just have to continue northwest on N. Druid Hills Road.

Search for homes/neighborhoods in the following clusters:

Parkview Schools
Brookwood Schools

So, look in the following areas:

Suwanee/Duluth
Parkview/Brookwood (also known as South Lilburn/East Lilburn/Mountain Park/North Snellville/South Lawrenceville)

Hey Aries, you are awesome! I love this forum. Sorry, I thought "North Druid Hills" was downtown. I will look for homes in the areas you recommended as well. BTW, I am using Buford HWY instead of I-85. There is only a negligible difference in commute time, but Buford HWY is a far more relaxing.
