Where in Atlanta in 2014 is most diverse for an interracial family? (Smyrna: condo, townhome)

My family and I have done extensive research the past couple years trying to relocate to the metro Atlanta area. We are not naive to realize it is a big very important decision. We were born and raised in the Detroit metro area and are in search of a better economic, crime, home, school and temperature climate.

After much research we like the Smyrna, Peachtree city, Fulton county, Alpharetta, Eagles Nest, West Hill, Morningside areas on paper. Our concern as a whole are the schools and racial climate. I am a white woman my husband is a black man and we have two biracial boys together. So we want to raise them in a great school system and loving safe community.

Where do you suggest we really hone in our living search or is the Atlanta area not as great, in those regards, as we believe it to be? Also, do you have any recommendations for relocation and people/resources to get in contact with to help along this process?

If you are looking for the most diversity in the Atlanta metro region, look no farther than GWINNETT COUNTY and its EXCELLENT urban-suburban county school system, which is regarded by most as one of the best large urban-suburban school systems in the entire nation.

With a population in which racial minorities make up just under 60% of the fast-growing county's population (including fast-growing Hispanic/Latino, East Asian, South Asian, African-American, and Biracial populations), Gwinnett County is also one of the most-diverse counties in the entire U.S.

GWINNETT COUNTY is most-definitely where you should start your search for a diverse environment for your family.

A lot depends on your budget -- for example, I wouldn't put Morningside and Smyrna in the same price point. And Fulton County is something like 70 miles long and very different throughout.

The rest should depend on your commute. Get the job first and then answer these questions. Quality of life here is dependent on commute. Want to make it to your child's evening music program or be able to go to "donuts and dad" before school, you need to not have an hour plus commute (unless you have a very flexible job!)

For all of those about to move or thinking about moving to the Atlanta metro area, in order for us to better assist you and for you to get more responses please provide us with as much of the following information as possible in your initial post please:

1. Budget
2. House/Condo/Townhome?
3. Employment Status(commute/work from home)
4. Children(public school vs. private)
5. Suburban or Urban lifestyle preference or a mix of the two
6. Easy access to public transit, important or not?
7. Preferable demographics of desired neighborhood.

These are just a few off the top of my head, feel free to add more.

I hope you both will come with jobs in hand, as jobs here are still pretty hard to come by. Morningside, while not super diverse it has great schools, but homes in that area start at $750k. Smyrna would be more affordable but even some of the newer homes there are now starting to sell for $600k. Still you should be able to find something way more affordable there than Morningside, granted you have a certain budget to stick to.

Alpharetta and Gwinnett County should be ok. But as others have said, where you live needs to be determined by where you work. You wouldn't want to work in Alpharetta but live in Peachtree City. I don't think you'll have an issue being a biracial couple. No one will bother you over that.

I though DeKalb was the most diverse county in Georgia. Either way, you're right to suggest Gwinnett County.

I can't think of anywhere in the immediate metro where being an interracial family is an issue. As you mentioned in your title it is 2014...

I second this. I am a black male and married to a white woman. Currently expecting our first child. We have been married for 6yrs (together for 10yrs) currently living in Coweta county, but travel all over the metro area. No problems to speak of. I see interacial couples/families almost everywhere we go(almost like noticing the car you drive over and over again)..........so I think you'll be just fine almost anywhere in metro Atlanta.

Decatur by a long shot. The difference: Gwinnett has diversity, but also a lot of tension around it. There are plenty of people there who would like to see the county as white as it was 20 years ago. Decatur actually welcomes and encourages diversity.

Tension? Where?? Mayyyybeeee in the far flung exurbs on the northern border, but even there it's doubtful.

There's about as much tension on diversity in Gwinnett as there is in Decatur.
