I think this is an acceptable starting point. As I've said before, I-75, I-85, and 400 should be 65 mph all the way to the Brookwood Split. They can handle it, and that's probably about the average speed anyway.

Having a 65 mph speed limit on Interstates 75 and 85 and on Georgia 400 north of the Brookwood Spilt (and on Interstates 75 and 85 south of the Lakewood Interchange) is a good idea.

Though in addition to raising the speed limit to 65 mph on the aforementioned stretches of freeway, I would also like to see all stretches of freeway outside of the I-285 Perimeter have a maximum speed limit of no lower than 70mph.

I would also like to see variable speed limits on electronic overhead signs implemented on all stretches of the freeway system throughout the state of Georgia so that maximum speeds can be adjusted upwards and downwards as driving conditions dictate so that traffic flow can be better managed, particularly during times of inclement weather and heavy traffic.

I would also eventually like to see all rural stretches of Georgia interstates widened to no fewer than 6 lanes (3 lanes in each direction), with 13-foot lane widths (to much more-safely accommodate the increasingly heavy amounts of freight truck traffic on Georgia interstates), 14-foot-wide emergency shoulders and maximum speed limits being raised to no lower than 80 mph (and no higher than 85 mph) on all 6-lane plus rural segments of Interstate through the utilization of electronic overhead variable speed limit signs that can be decreased and increased as driving conditions dictate.

LOL. I have been fortunate but I will definitely slow it down until they raise the limit.

there really shouldn't be any speed limits above about 55 anywhere ITP, and especially on 285. i know there are a lot who are anxious to see the speed limit go up, but isn't it dangerous enough as it is? the only way they should raise the speed limit is if they have collector-distributor lanes, in which case the express lanes could have a speed of something like 70, or if the idea for an express tunnel goes through, in which case they could also raise the limit. but as it is, it's really not appropriate to have speeds faster than that on interstates with that much traffic moving in and out of exits and ramps.

Fwiw, it is the section of I-20 west of the connector. The east side is still 55 mph but DeKalb, GSP and DPS enjoy that limit as well.

I guess you've never driven on a freeway around here. Almost no one goes 55. The typical speed is more like 70 or 80.

I know that when I leave Decatur and come home around I-285 at midnight or so that the good officers of Doraville will be there watching out for my 'safety.' I always set my cruise at 55 when going by there late at night. It's difficult to drive 55 on a 5-lane wide road with little traffic.

Oh man--are they camping out at the Peachtree Industrial exit again? They used to hang out there all the time.

Faster speed limits coming to a county near you

Quote:
On I-75 from Howell Mill Road up to Windy Hill in Cobb County, the speed limit has gone from 55 to 65 miles per hour. On I-85 from just north of North Druid Hills to the Gwinnett County line, it's going to be 65 MPH. Through Gwinnett County up to the I-985 split, the speed limit on I-85 is going up to 70 miles per hour.

Good! Maybe now GDOT can fix the message boards saying speeds 55+ considering the actual average is closer to 70. There's a difference between free flow 70 and a thick 55-60. But anyway, I'm just glad they'll finally be reasonable. 55 has been a joke.
