Had there been a preemptive state of emergency issued before Tuesday’s storm, Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Erroll Davis said children would not have been in class that day.

“If we had known what (the state) knew, we would have probably made a different call, or at least we would have had different information to synthesize,” he told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Sunday. “If GEMA, or anyone, declares an emergency, we’re not going to send the kids out in that.”

Davis’ comments came just before thousands of students and teachers return to the classroom Monday after three snow days. There will be counselors at several schools, especially locations were children had to spend the night..."

If school had been cancelled on Tuesday throughout the metro area, it would have been a totally different day. Perhaps there needs to be emergency executive power (i.e. governor) to call school off for the entire metro area. Of course, Deal would not have called it differently in this instance. It's like all of the leaders were playing a game of "decision chicken."

What is extremely ironic to me is that in this republican stronghold called Metro Atlanta, where people like to pride themselves on being independent thinkers not relying on government, parents relegated their decision-making to whom? The government. That's right. Very ironic.

If more parents would have been exercising their own independent thinking about the weather, far less children would have been in school all over the Metro that day. Anyone can make a miscalculation so I am not saying that the parents are awful. I'm just saying delegation of that decision by the masses to the government is very ironic given the strong Republican population, many of which pride themselves on not being tied to government. But maybe I've misunderstood that. Who knows.
