I was wondering if you all could tell me approx. how long it would take from both Canton and Cumming to Marietta Blvd, Atlanta 30318 if I had to be there at 7am. Would it be more than an hour. And which would be an easier commute.

I think you might be able to make it in an hour unless there is a problem on I75.

Depends on where exactly you're starting from- some areas of both towns are 20+ minutes from the highway.

If you're relatively close to the highway, you could be at that location from Canton in less than an hour at 6am. I can't comment firsthand on Cumming, but it's likely around the same.

Why are you living out all the way in Cumming or Canton and working downtown? Could you opt to move closer in?

The reason I say this is because while the morning commute will be a snap, the afternoon commute (depending on what time you are leaving) could easily be twice your morning commute. And I don't think spending ~15 hours a week in your car in traffic is a great idea.

Depends upon whether you will be fired for being late once or twice a week.
When we were doing a job downtown where we absolutely, positively needed to be on the site by 7:30 am, we found that leaving at 4:30 was the only real guarantee. Most times, 5:30 or 6 am was ok, but not always.

Canton, I think, has more 'back roads' into NW Atlanta when you have to bail out of the freeway.

Your ride should not be that bad if you are leaving that early. I'd say at 6 you could get there in less than an hour. I drive from Canton to Vinings and leave at 8:30. It would be a rare occassion to arrive later than 9:30 and typically, I'd arrive between 9 and 9:20. I leave work a little after 5 and usually arrive just after 6--afternoons average about an hour. I'm not 100% sure where 30318 is, but if it is the southern part of downtown, you might want to consider Douglasville, where you could commute on I20, taking you right to the southern part of the city. This area is also quite affordable.

I have picked canton or cummings as of right now. It seems to be the best fit.. low crime , good schools. I am not really sure where I will be working yet. THis is all preliminary. With that being said..do you guys have a local news channel that keeps up with everything. Down here we have Baynews9 which is the local channel for tampa. I am looking for something up your way.

all your replies are appreciated.

There are plenty of those areas closer in. And crime can happen anywhere (as seen recently with the shooting at Arbor Place Mall in a so-called "very safe" suburb of Atlanta). You can't avoid it entirely, and I understand that you don't want to live in a high-crime area. But you might be very sorry for living that far out. The amount of time spent in traffic instead of with your family will lower your quality of life. But, that is my opinion of course.

Bottom line - there are plenty of areas closer in that will fit your criteria, so don't just settle for a HORRID commute to get those amenities.
