Near Atlanta, but not in it
Looking to move to Georgia from the northeast. I'm looking for more of a small town atmosphere, but do not want to be to far away from the city. I have a 5yr old so good schools are important.
If you could recommend any good cities near Atlanta it would be appreciated.

Fayetteville sounds like the perfect match for you! Fayetteville is a suburb of Atlanta's southside. It's about 20 miles south, and really has a small-town feel. However, it's a 30-40 minute drive from Atlanta. Commuting to the city isn't as tough if you're coming from the southside.
Fayetteville is the county seat (Fayette County). Fayette County's schools have been rated #1 in Georgia. As a teacher myself and as a Fayetteville resident, I highly recommend looking into this area

Would I like Atlanta?
I am seriously thinking of relocating to GA, to be exact, somewhere near Cartersville/Kennesaw (Cobb County). I am a married white woman who is a stay at home mom and we are fairly conservative (but not real religious)I prefer to be in a very conservative area. I would like to be near shopping, very well rated schools that are friendly and top notch...does this exist? Would I have to invest in a private school there? Or could we go public? I am in my early 40s and prefer to be among middle class to upper class folks, if that is still exists anymore, I certainly do not want to be in any poor communities or ones that are dangerous or not middle class...no where near in fact!...thanks a bunch and god bless!
I am thinking of spending up to 200 grand on a home..but may try to spend more if its in a a very safe area!

You might find this sort of lifestyle around Conyers/Rockdale County/SE of Atlanta.
All I have ever known growing up here is the suburbs--a stable and nurturing 'Community' feel that centered around the schools in the area--but I can't say there was a 'small town feel'.
Decatur, GA is considered by many to be a model community--has received national awards. It is really only about 10 miles from Atlanta--I don't know if that is the type of environment you seek?
For most residents the commute to/from work and routes available for errands, etc are a primary consideration. If you identify a particular area--ie: NE, NW, SE, SW--then posters could make more specific suggestions.
Good Luck.

Check out downtown Decatur. The city of Decatur has excellent schools. Also, the city is very walkable, has a MARTA line that connects the Decatur courthouse to downtown Atlanta, and has a lot of small stores and restaurants.

You should probably stay where you are. Metro Atlanta is growing fast, and is becoming the new home of people from all over the country who actually don't want to be homogenous.
But if GA is a must, then you might want to consider being in an area other than within the metro Atlanta area. Cartersville or some such locale will probably get you close to the kind of people you want, and the school populations will reflect the same. The academics, relatively speaking, will be underachieving or mediocre at best. But then that's probably par for the course. Even better, consider Jasper, Blairsville, Dawsonville, etc.
You might want to rule out Kennesaw, as it's growing pretty fast and getting less homogenous each year. And the only way to control that kind of growth is to make it less affordable--pretty much putting y'all out of the market.
Good luck.

Check out Kennesaw and Acworth in the area north of McCollum and east of 41. Lots of affordable homes in your price range.
For a school, look up North Cobb Christian School.
