Evening! I'm a single mom of one looking to move from Tennessee to Georgia. I was looking at the cities Jonesboro and Riverdale. Riverdale seemed like a okay place but from reading some of the reviews I'm a little skeptical now. Anywho can some one please help me out?????? I know no place is perfect but I'm just looking for a nice area without lots of crime and a decent public school. ANY SUGGESTIONS??? thanks

Because of some really major issues with the county's school system and governance in recent years, Clayton County (which includes areas like Jonesboro, Riverdale, Forest Park, Morrow, Lovejoy, Lake City, etc) is often not the first place that newcomers and relocatees are directed to.

There are plenty of other places around the greater Atlanta metropolitan region with low crime and good schools that you could look at besides Clayton County, which is certainly livable but is not necessarily what one could call an ideal place to live at this point.

Before looking for a place to live, what you should focus on is finding suitable employment and then looking for a place to live that will be geographically convenient to where you will be working.

This. Also, I am told that crime is on the higher side in Riverdale because many former city residents were relocated there after public housing closed. Some of those folk have apparently brought a bit of criminal activity with them to the Riverdale area. I have not heard that crime is a problem in Morrow, Lovejoy or Lake City but I am not that well-versed on Clayton County.

This is an excellent point.

Unfortunately, one cannot say that Riverdale's derisive nickname of "Reefer-dale" is entirely undeserved at this point in time.

That's good that you've got a job lined up before moving to metro Atlanta.

We get A LOT of people on this board inquiring about places to live with no job lined up expecting to move to the Atlanta area and easily find a job like this was the 1980's or 1990's when Atlanta WAS a boomtown.

Even outside of this forum, many people move to large Sunbelt metro areas like Atlanta expecting the economy and the job market to be like it was 30, 25, 20, 15 years ago and they usually get quite the reality check and a big shock when find out that it is not like that anymore after they have moved here with only a very-modest life savings.

It is good that you will be moving to the Atlanta area with a job lined up, that is very-important.

In what city or town or zip code will your place of employment be located and what price range (price of home or amount of monthly rent) will you be looking to pay for a place to live?

We might be able to help find someplace to live with low crime, good schools and a manageable commute that is close to where you will be working.

My job is a franchise so they have a couple of different locations for me to chose from in Georgia. However here's what I'm looking for; 3 bedroom, 2 bath, decent neighborhood, with different varieties of families, 750-800 monthly. A nice public elementary school, more of a country or suburban setting for the neighborhood. And somewhere no more than 45 mins from the city or shopping areas.
