They can't do that without more advance noticed. Though it is certainly possible that that capability will be part of the upgrade if it didn't already exist.

Yeah, I know they would give more advanced notice.

I think one of the reasons for going to the breeze card system was that is supports distance based fares.

Distance based fares can be done right or done wrong. On the extreme end of wrong, they would keep the $2.50 base fare, and charge more for longer distances. But if they pulled the cost for a one-station ride down to $1.00 or something, they might actually increase the reason for people to ride MARTA for short-distance trips. However, distance based fares might be confusing for newcomers, the choice riders, and visitors. I know Washington Metro's system practically requires a college degree to figure out.

A solution that has its own problems is a zone system. Perhaps make the [daytime] Green Line stations and Arts Center-Garnett one zone, with all other stations being the second zone. Of course, one issue there is Arts Center-Lindbergh, do they charge a two-zone fare, or the lower one-zone fare? Unfortunately, the methods to implement distance-based fares on MARTA vary widely so there's really no way we can say if they will hurt or help until MARTA presents a plan.

**** no. while distance based fares would certainly bring in more revenue, it would crush the little economic mobility we have. imagine someone trying to get from college park to a job in alpharetta? it would increase car traffic, decrease MARTA ridership (by a lot), and continue to make atlanta a city where the rich become richer and the poor become poorer.

they have a distance-based fare in san francisco that goes up to $11.00 for a one way trip. and guess what? they're #2 in income inequality nationwide.

transit is one of the ways in there should be no discrimination based on area. when you limit people's ability to move around, you limit their freedom and cut off their economic opportunities.

it doesn't actually cost MARTA a cent more to take someone from college park to oakland than it does to take someone from college park to north springs. why? because the train is already going there! it costs the same amount to take the train from point A to point B whether there is one person on the train or whether there are 400 people on the train.

Well it does cost more for Marta to move more people,
At some point they need to add additional car sets, (buy car, maintain car, clean car, Electricity to move the car)

You are missing the point.

The train will be going there anyway, there is almost 0 incremental cost to adding an additional rider. Do you really think the cost of energy required to move 1 additional person on a 6 car train is even measurable?

I actually liked the point the previous poster made about incremental costs and distance based fares. It is an interesting way of thinking about it. I disagree with much else in his/her post, but this was interesting.
