In my opinion this is perfect for not only the area but Turner Field. If Ga State can pull it off they could create a nice urban experience similar to tech. The area is large enough for a new arena as well, which would centrally locate all athletic activities in one location. It also has enough room to build nice midrise student housing. If they were to construct a bridge to connect the existing campus to this one it would enhance the area.

MARTA having a station within walking distance is also a plus.

I agree completely. At this point in time, this plan is the absolute best case scenario for that site, GSU and the neighborhood IMO.

This is the most exciting development news I've heard in Atlanta in a long time. If Georgia State can pull this off, it will almost make losing the Braves to Cobb County worthwhile.

How about we really dream big and hope GSU builds a light rail or people mover system to connect the two campuses?

If Ga State can incorporate a new arena into the plan the school could demolish the current venue and use the site for something else. I also imagine since the site is so close to Grant Park and zoo Atlanta, GA State could partner with the zoo and build a nice botanical garden and further enhance the area. I can see a ton of new business moving into the area and many of the older more historic being rented out.

Since they're proposing a commuter parking deck, they should at least continue to have Panther Express service between the 2 areas (they do it now for students that park at Turner Field). It's also important to remember there are plans to have the streetcar run down both Capitol Ave and Abernathy/Georgia Ave, intersecting right in the middle of this proposed redevelopment.

Probably explains why the city really didn't sweat it about losing the Braves. This development could do things for that area Turner Field couldn't do. I also wonder if Ga State is planning something even bigger.

I wondered the same thing. Figure it either means "mixed income" housing or non-student housing. Any ideas?

After skimming through the 25 page proposal, I think it's housing not meant just for students. They have housing designated as student housing, market housing, and townhomes.
