cqholt: Or maybe they are trying to become a "place" for Braves-goers early on?

It's strictly business and a shrewd business move moving to the center of the metro area, not an emotional one.

By that definition, the "center" of the metro area would be Perimeter Center, not Cumberland. Even the Braves' own map shows this:

Of course, Sandy Springs/Fulton County wasn't giving the Braves hundreds of millions in public subsidies either, hence why the Braves are Cobb-bound.

You left out part of the definition.

Quote:
sub·ur·ban
[suh-bur-buhn] Show IPA
adjective
1.
pertaining to, inhabiting, or being in a suburb or the suburbs of a city or town.
2.
characteristic of a suburb or suburbs.
Characteristic is the key part you left out.

Suburban in common vernacular is a style of development, typical of the 20th century outside of city cores, not necessarily the "main" city in a metro area. Many suburbs were of cities that later got swallowed up by other metro areas. East Cobb is a suburb of Marietta, historically, not Atlanta. Marietta is a suburb of nothing, technically. For instance, suburbs West of Trenton, NJ are not suburbs of New York City. They are suburbs of Trenton, regardless of Trenton being swallowed up. Trenton is not a suburb of New York. Providence is not a suburb of Boston.

Almost all of Buckhead is suburban. As is the area along Langford Parkway and OTP West of I-285.

Anything else is Atlanta-centric thinking, of stretching definitions to put Atlanta in the center of it all, and that kind of attitude just pisses people off.

Btw, EX-Urban DOES imply a certain distance from the urban core. Suburban areas, on the other hand, can be right in the urban core.

The only remaining acceptable names. I shouldn't even care anymore.

By your logic, 2 more teams better change their names . . .

Bronx Yankees
Queens Mets

The Yankees don't even have a NYC address/zip code. Outrage!

Um, The Bronx and Queens are in New York City. WITHIN the city limits.

Oh, and considering they are also in the State of New York....

Maybe something along the lines of this ridiculous official name is more appropriate - The Los Angelos Angles of Anaheim. At least it is accurate.

So.... The Atlanta Braves of Cumberland?

no...there are these things called definitions...you're talking infrastructure design or layout. Being suburban is ALL about location...not design. NOTHING in Buckhead is suburban...because it's in the city proper. Exurban areas are those areas that are beyond the suburbs. Cumming is exurban...smyrna, marietta...suburban...ANYTHING IN ATLANTA...CITY PROPER.

Buckhead might have been a suburb PRIOR to being swallowed up by Atlanta...but it is CITY PROPER NOW. Characteristic of suburbs means just that...and is equivalent to pertaining to suburbs. By your lax use of definitions, if someone but a farm style house downtown, it would all of a sudden be pasture or farm land.

Do these ignorant people not known that Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn are in the city of New York?

Ok, find me 60+ acres of continuous, undeveloped land in Sandy Springs/Fulton Co that the Braves can acquire . . . and a willing seller that owns that 60+ acres and won't price gouge.

More likely, the Braves will have 82+ continuous acres of undeveloped land and the possibility of owning the GPC/Napa headquarters building/parking deck at Herodian/Circle 75 as well. Again, find me that opportunity ANYWHERE in Fulton County.

Do you guys even try to think like a businessman before you come up w/ these outlandish butt-hurt theories?

Dekalb was actually trying to lure the Braves as well.

If Fulton had financed it, they probably would have stayed where they were. I wouldn't see them moving to the Perimeter in that case. Atlanta has too much clout in Fulton government.

Yes I'm quoting myself, but only because it is such a good idea. The new appropriate name for the Braves should follow this model.

So, which is better?

The Atlanta Braves of Cumberland

The Atlanta Braves of Smyrna

The Atlanta Braves of Cobb

And I realized I spelled Los Angeles wrong....
