Atlanta BeltLine visitor center?
Quote:
Enter the Atlanta Beltline Center, opening April 28 at the Stove Works office complex on the Eastside Beltline Trail, a stone’s throw from Krog Street Market.

Since 2016, the Atlanta Beltline Partnership has claimed the office space as its headquarters, but the organization will soon open its doors to the public. Plans call for a space to rest “and immerse yourself in the project that’s transforming our city like no project has before,” according to recent ABP communications.

Funded by private investments, such as gifts from the James M. Cox Foundation and Ponce City Market, the Beltline Center will be a place where even the most seasoned trail-users can learn a thing or two about the trails’ past, present, and future.

“There will be maps and other visuals, but much, much more,” ABP spokesman John Becker tells Curbed Atlanta. “The Center will be a place where people can learn about all aspects of the Atlanta Beltline project—as well as the Atlanta Beltline Partnership’s mission—through exhibits, interactive displays, and programming that highlight the project’s history, scope, and impact.”

Why would they do this the same weekend as Streets Alive?

ASA is only going to close DeKalb for 4-6 hours, and on Sunday.

Plus that intersection is going to see a huge amount of foot / bike traffic during ASA.

Dekalb is actually closed for about seven hours, to include set up and take down. But Wylie is only closed for a couple blocks, not a huge deal. Bikes and pedestrians can still get through on the beltline.

Beltline officials are currently designing the trail—and its promised transit counterpart—while electric utility Georgia Power finishes up a power line rebuild project adjacent part of the coming pathway.
Georgia Power is currently in the process of replacing its outdated transmission lines, although the company plans to cease operations during the summertime—its busiest season.
The uprooting and replacing of those massive poles will recommence in the Fall, after which the Beltline’s designs will begin to be realized in concrete form.

Because of the utility’s project, the Northeast Trail’s development will be split into three fragments. The middle piece, stretching from the north side of Piedmont Park to Mayson Street, will be the first part developed—after Georgia Power is out of the way.

Still, assuming ABI can timely secure funding for this part of the path, the Northeast Trail could be complete by 2020, according to project officials.

why can't they go ahead and bury the lines through there, or find some way to fund doing so?

Those are high voltage transmission lines, which are rarely routed underground. The installation costs is astronomical compared to overhead, with a shorter lifespan.

In other words, they're too cheap to do it right so we still have to put up with things bringing down powerlines despite this being a perfect opportunity to guard against it.
