Let's hope that the redevelopment at UA spills into the south part.

Umm.... Actually a tad bit inaccurate.... I come from a long line of Atlantans... a bit of rarity.

Atlanta wasn't a HUGE city early on, just big for a smaller region of the country. Much of our growth has been the last 4 decades.... The post-WWII car era. So it isn't that we started some type of suburban friendly policy that caused us to deconstruct our urban spaces compared to other large cities... our urban spaces weren't actually that big to begin with and were mostly limited to areas inside the Beltline and even then the single family lot housing, like in Home Park and Midtown, was common.

Our urban core wasn't really much bigger than its current footprint and many of our "urban neighborhoods" are actually streetcar suburbs.

It was also, in large part, ITP governments original zoning policies when the city was growing rapidly that pushed many into suburban neighborhoods... not just a "suburban subsidy."

Atlanta was never zoned to be like an older city from the beginning and always had strong residential neighborhoods resistant (for better and worse) to change.

Now the zoning patterns of what we call the suburbs today weren't any better. Unincorporated Dekalb Count when it was built was probably the worse offender, even though much of it is ITP.

Growing from a few hundred thousand people to over 5 million was bound to cause us to have huge suburban areas no matter what happened.

Cities thrive off young, energetic people, not old people who wish to stay in the suburbs. It's why SF, Seattle,D.C., and Austin are booming. Cities aren't looking to appeal to older people. #sorrynotsorry
I agree with you, but he is right to spot out our traditional suburban areas are still growing rapidly.

It is also correct to spot out that space and current zoning (and historical districts) don't leave enough room for even most of our region's growth to go to the core of our city, much less solely ITP, so some of the divisive arguments really need to go away.

Can't post the article, but can post the relevant information within:

- Reed wants to sell the Civic Center, Underground, and Turner Field to raise money to address the city's $1B infrastructure backlog.
- The city is "likely" to turn those three properties over to Invest Atlanta, which will set the terms for redevelopment and handle the bidding process.
- Rehashes details of the $12.6M plan with Friendship Baptist to buy the Morris Brown campus.
- Rehashes recent developments: Streetcar, Beltline, Buckhead Atlanta, PCM, etc.
- Civic Center is currently expected to lose $400K over the next five years.
- "At least four" developers have shown interest in Turner Field.
- City's population growth has grown from 1% between 2000–2010 to 6% between 2010–2012.
- Some are concerned with whether the plans are achievable.
- Others point to concerns about gentrification and affordable housing related to Ponce City Market and the new Falcons Stadium.

The problem for Atlanta is that it has no major natural feature to build around, like a waterfront. So nothing is that special about downtown.

Anything about plans for the shelter and to clean up the area on Pine street. Trash and clothes are everywhere. I believe in helping the poor, but for the area to be that run down and looking like a third world country is not sexy. Why not build another shelter someone else, and offer that land for redevelopment, and bridge the gap between downtown and midtown.
