Default Help Please: Tax Return

Back in March my Wife and I had our taxes done by this guy who was supposed to be pretty good. He had his own Tax Accouting service. May came around we got our Federal back but no state. I have called the state tax office have spoken to people, and been referred to other people I have never heard a thing. I called today (12/11) and I was told that the guy who did our Taxes is under review. I was told that my case was being handled by compliance because I need to provide documentation. Can anybody tell me what this means? Does it sound like I would need to pay money? Am I in some trouble? A little nervous.

That depends- were all of your deductions legit, or did he play with the numbers? Did you report all of your income correctly? If everything was on the up-and-up, you've got nothing to worry about.

Don't worry too much. You are responsible for whatever was filed, but they will likely be lenient with you since you used someone else to prepare your return. They don't expect people to know every detail of every tax law - that's why you paid someone else to do it for you.

Worst case scenario: They will re-do your tax return with correct information. You would be asked to pay any extra tax you legitimately owe (and should have paid to begin with), or you may receive a refund if you overpaid.
