Ouch!!! 40$!! - Yikes! I can just see a carful of little sleeping kiddos trying to snooze while their parents are trying to wake them to get their money's worth out of the $40 dollar light display!

Next year, try downtown Lawrenceville. They light the tree on Thanksgiving Eve, and Santa arrives then also. They have caroling, led by bands and singers. Actually, last year, there were bands in every shop. There are horse and buggy rides (last year we had Clydesdales), and street vendors, and things for the kids to do. Hot chocolate and funnel cakes, etc. Also, they decorate the downtown area, particularly the Old Courthouse. It's fun on a small-town level. We really enjoy it.

...Maybe if you post this in November...we'll remember. I think most of us aren't even THINKING about holiday lights right now.

Gladewood Drive in Johns Creek. It is between Abbotts Bridge and Sargent Roads. Just search google maps for "Gladewood Drive Johns Creek GA" (or "Gladewood Drive Alpharetta GA" if that doesn't work) to find it. Nearly every house on the street decorates heavily.

If you paid full price for Lake Lanier then you paid too much. Discount coupons are readily available at local merchants (Publix, Kroger, etc).
We have gone to see the lights at Lake Lanier many times and have never experienced a 3-hour traffic jam. The lights were great the first time, but the show sees very little change year-to-year. Now we go mostly because it is a tradition and our daughter still enjoys it. We also stop at the carnival on the way out and get just as much enjoyment (if not more) from that.
I'd say it's worth doing once.
