We are a family with 3 kids from Birmingham, AL visiting Atlanta soon. Since Asian food is not easy to get in our area, we want to stock up on stuff like nori, miso, natto, mochi, etc. Also, we'd like to try family friendly Asian buffet that's affordable. We are staying near Northlake Mall hotel for a night (I don't know what that area is called). Can someone give us some ideas of where we might go? By the way, what is the sales tax in the Atlanta area? Is there sales tax on groceries? Thanks for any insight.

Shop at:

Farmers Market in Atlanta, Georgia | Buford Highway Farmers Market

or

Hmart.com: Online Shopping for Asian Grocery, Korean Kimchi, Rice Cookers, Appliances & more at everyday low prices.

Both stores are very close to one another so if you can't find what you are looking for at one place, you can always go to the other store.

Yes there is sales tax in Atlanta. Groceries have no State sales tax but some items may be taxed by the county.

As for Asian buffets, skip them and hit one of the local restaurants instead. Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese or Korean? Those are the major Asian eateries in that area of Buford Highway.

Even though that stuff is hard to get in Birmingham, you should consider services like Amazon exist that afford you the opportunity to have that stuff shipped relatively painlessly.

i recommend you take a drive down buford highway; there are tons of korean and chinese restaurants, shops, etc. however, most of the signs are only in korean and chinese, so if you don't speak either you'll have to look closely to see what they actually sell.

here's a map to get you from northlake mall to buford highway:

also, if you go a bit further out, there are a lot of korean restaurants and retail outlets and whatnot on pleasant hill road; it's up I-85 about 5 miles out from the perimeter.

Excellent suggestions here. I'll add this to them:

Farmers Market in Atlanta, Georgia | Buford Highway Farmers Market

All of these are convenient to your hotel.

I can say from experience that all of the foods you suggested can be found at H-Mart, it's a wonderful little supermarket hehe and I love going there.

Also (I'm really sorry if I'm assuming too much here!), but since all the foods you listed are Japanese, I'd thought i'd share this list from the Consulate-General of Japan in Atlanta's website, which puts together some of the Japanese groceries in the area, as well as in neighboring areas and states. There are tons others there too for everything from education to Karaoke, if you're interested.

Hope this helps!
