I appreciate your input!!

That IS the worst commute in Atlanta- you couldn't pay me to do that one unless I could work 6am-4pm, and I've got a fairly high tolerance for commuting.

ckws: i think your coming from the DFW area, and I-285 on the northside is comparable to I-635 between 35E and I-30...i think due to the trucks 285 is the worst road in atlanta.......i still think woodstock is OK for you if your DH leaves at 6:30 and takes Canton Road (highway 5) to I-75. I would strongly recommend avoiding I-575.

You don't have to go private in Smynings...who's telling you this?

Very few (perhaps none?) of my neighbors are paying for private school, and many of them could easily afford it. Why should you?

I do the dreaded commute from East Woodstock to the 400/I285 area. If I leave my house at 6aM I can be at the office in 30 minutes. If I leave at 6:15am I will get there in about 45 minutes....and it goes on from there. I leave my office at 4pm on the dot and get home in about an hour and 10 minutes.

We moved out to this area because of the price of homes; if we spent more money closer in than we would be spending the same amount or more than we would in Denver and this whole move was for nothing.

I have not done the 575 drive but have heard it is pretty similiar to what I find. Note: 285 is hell at 4pm though!!

Ouch! So is that why I hate living in Atlanta?

On the other hand, Sandy Springs would perhaps fill the bill. Most homes are older, plenty of trees, excellent schools, more central location, etc. A short commute on 285 to Paces Ferry or Interstate North Pkwy/Akers Mill type backroads could save hubby's sanity. Plenty of very expensive homes in the Heards Ferry/Powers Ferry area BUT there are numerous area homes in the 300s, as well. Stay close to/west of Riverside and the commute could be easy.

Default 30 minutes can make world of difference

I live in Woodstock and commute to Doraville every day. I find that leaving at 6 instead of 630 makes a world of difference: 40 minutes versus an hour. For me, I'll leave at 6, get to near my office and have a leisurely cup of coffee -- or actually go in 20 minutes early.

I echo the Canton Hwy suggestion. They're supposed to widen 575 -- someday. Oh, and living in Woodstock is worth the trip. I love downtown Woodstock!

I live in Woodstock as well. I love downtown. It's so quaint. There are some great restaurants there and coming. Our favorite is Thomas Magnolia House. THe food is fresh, the service terrific. You can even bring your own wine and they only charge a 10.00 corkage.
