Okay if you are from North Jersey you know what I am talking about. Eating these on Christmas Eve is a family tradition......does anyone know where I can get some in the Atlanta area???
Thanks! |

I don't recall that being a tradition when I lived in NJ, nor do I remember buying them anywhere- we used to make them at home with a packaged mix from the supermarket. I haven't seen it in years, though (not that I've looked for it...lol) in NJ or in GA.

I'm from North Jersey, and never ate sloppy joes on Chrismas Eve either. Those delicacies (tongue in cheek here) were strictly for those nights when we had a baby sitter with limited cooking skills.

Spent a lot of time at my aunt's house in Morristown, and never knew about the "tradition" either. You can buy Manwich with a pound of ground beef at Kroger.

I get the feeling that the original poster was possibly referring to the other type of sloppy joes that are prepared with cold cuts. Those being turkey, corned beef etc. Other ingredients are cole slaw and Russian dresssing. THey can pretty much be found out at any Jersey or NY deli. To be fair I had never known that such a thing existed myself until about 20 years ago when I began working at a suburban Essex County law firm that placed lunch orders at a local deli. They are rather good also I must say.

Used to get them from a Jewish deli in NJ (essex county).

Good point- now that you mention it, I do recall those sandwiches being called Sloppy Joes as well, but still don't see the tie to Christmas Eve.

Bob, I think the OP means it's their family tradition, not necessarily one shared by the masses. Not my idea of a Christmas Eve feast!

The tradition was my ours and also one of my sixty or so first cousins and their families. My Mother didn't want to cook dinner then lay out gifts for seven kids. Yes, they are the cold cut type sandwiches. Maybe it is just an Essex county thing. I may be out of luck here.

This NJ deli will ship sandwiches>>>
http://www.millburndeli.com/ I think I would buy the ingredients and make some myself. My dad's Christmas Eve tradition was oyster stew. bhs |
