Rawr! Tired Downtown Office Building to Get a Sexy Makeover - Snazzy Transformations - Curbed Atlanta

Quote:
As Curbed mentioned in June, the developer Jim Cumming is rumored to be transforming the office building at 222 Piedmont into a trendy boutique hotel. Now early concept renderings for the project have surfaced on Plexus R&D's website and it seems the sixties-era snoozer could end up being quite the looker by the time all is said and done. With oodles of natural light on every floor, ivy and greenery coexisting with the building itself and well-hidden parking, this design would radically transform the corner of Piedmont and John Portman Boulevard. (The hotel in the renderings is labeled Deuce; we can only hope that all rooms come with a turntable, Portlandia-style.) The building, formerly the HQ for Oxford Industries, was purchased for $2.5 million last November.

Very impressive for a renovation, especially compared to the Aloft renovation which was already a hotel and didn't end up nearly as interesting as this rendering.

The "Deuce" though? lol...

Let's keep in mind that this is only a conceptual rendering. This firm has done other concept renderings for projects where they were not the actual architect in order to promote their name. That could also be the case here and I would imagine that it would be difficult to make the numbers work for a reno as extensive as the one depicted here.

I ride by that sad looking building every evening and have noticed it's forlorn & unkempt state.
Somehow I missed the news of Oxford's relocation out of it so I've been curious over the apparent neglect of it.
Where did Oxford relocate to?
Directly across Portman & to the north of this building, there is a big renovation project underway that is converting a former office tower on the east side of the Hilton block into loft residences.
That section of Piedmont is nothing to look at presently and is generally lifeless without any hint of street activity so collectively the 2 projects there could be a turnaround for the area.
Now if some sense of energy & renovation would expand in a northerly direction from there on up Piedmont to the hulk of a ruin (the former Methodist hq building) at Piedmont & Ralph McGill, there would really be some exciting positive movement going on in the area.
As for Fort Southern Company (i. e. Darth Vader's black tower) across Piedmont to the east of the old Methodist building, because of current security concerns, there's no hope of anything in the future to connect it to the street or the neighborhood. What a horrible black hole/ dead zone mistake of urban planning & design it is!
