I noticed that on the bridge on Cooper Lake when heading from Nickajack to E-W, there's space for another bridge, and it's even cleared out like they were thinking about putting one there at some point. If they built a bridge there, they could open the road up to being 2 lanes on each side around there.

We were actually hoping they would have done that when they were doing the new paved segment on Cooper Lake at the Woodbridge Crossing entrance, but I guess a new bridge is a lot more expensive than a few hundred yards of new blacktop and some new paint.
Maybe it's in the works at some level, though. That would be a good thing, I think.

Vet's Memorial is a great commute into the city. I am in Mableton a lot and am considering buying a home in Highland Village. The commute from there is pretty great. It's less than 10 miles to midtown and the Fox Theatre. It's true that you have to drive through areas that aren't exactly idyllic, but the savings in time and distance are huge. If you do resort to I-20, I've been very pleased with the commute on there. If you don't HAVE TO get off on the connector, you are golden. And, if you exit on Spring St. or White St., it's an amazing commute. I used to live on the NE side of Atlanta and the commute from there is absolutely horrific.

Once again, Vinings Estates is in Smyrna. In case you care, there are 3 other neighborhoods that are in the same boat as us - are located in Smyrna but are serviced by the Mableton post office.

Do you happen to know the 3 neighborhoods or more in this position???
If the neighborhood is zoned in the Nickajack elementary school district does that mean that is actually part of Smyrna?

I think Vinings Estates, The Cove at Vinings Estates, and the nice new Manor at Vinings development (all on Cooper Lake Road south of the E/W Connector) are all technically in Smyrna, and Lakeview at Vinings might be as well.
Heck, Chimney Estates off Civitania Road mgiht be too. I'm not sure where the Smyrna city boundary actually falls these days.

Lakeview at Vinings and Chimney Oaks (off of Cooper Lake and Civitania) are both part of the city of Smyrna. There is also a neighborhood off of Nickajack Road and behind The Cove at Vinings Estates (the streets are Summertree Court and Summerwood Drive) is also part of Smyrna.

The three neighborhoods to which I was referring are Chimney Oaks, Lakeview at Vinings, and the older neighborhood off of Nickajack (right across from Nickajack Park). The older neighborhood is the one ATLDad references above... the name of it escapes me at the moment. The Cove at Vinings Estates is also part of Smyrna with a Mableton mailing address, but I really consider that part of the Vinings Estates development. As I think about it now, the new neighborhood of about 6 estate homes at the corner of Nickajack and Cooper Lake (also across from Nickajack Park) is also Smyrna with a Mableton address.
If you head south of the E-W Connector on Cooper Lake, Chimney Oaks is really the boundary subdivision. When you pass Chimney Oaks/Civitania on Cooper Lake, you leave Smyrna and enter Mableton. Likewise when you pass all of Chimney Oaks on Civitania (there are about 5 houses on the right side of Civitania that are also part of Chimney Oaks although they are not "within" the neighborhood), you leave Smyrna. The other Smyrna boundary is off of Nickajack - I am not sure if it is the train tracks or Fontaine, but since there is nothing between the tracks and Fontaine, it really does not matter. I hope those boundaries help clarify some of the mess surrounding the Smyrna city limits with a Mableton mailing address.
As for your question about Nickajack Elementary, I have no idea how that fits into the Smyrna city limits. Since Smyrna does not have its own city schools (like Decatur), it is possible that some people who live within the Smyrna city limits (and have a Mableton address) are zoned to other schools. However, I have no idea how this works in reality. Rcsteiner, where is Stoneybrook zoned (since you are a border community)?

Thanks to everybody that responded, you have been a great help! I find this border question to be very interesting. Technically speaking, if we were going to purchase a home in one of the neighborhoods listed above, we would pay Smyrna taxes yet have a Mableton address. Am I figuring this correctly? It seems very odd to be within one city's limits yet have another city's postal address. Politics never cease to amaze me!

I did some searching around on the Smyrna government website and Vinings Estates is indeed part of Smyrna, as are the other neighborhoods that you guys mentioned. Here is a link to the ward map that shows what is Smyrna and what is Mableton. Hope this helps anyone else that was curious:
