We are considering a move from Schaumburg ( One of the NW suburbs of Chicago) to the Atlanta area (we have Alpharetta, Marietta and Suwanee in our target list). Wondering if someone can share insights on the following:

School system – we have 3 kids and school system is very important to us
Information Technology Jobs – Both of us are in the Technology and wondering how the job market is in the area.
Safely /Crime Rate
Diversity- We are of India decent. Chicago and its suburbs are very diverse.

IT jobs and Indians are in the northern suburbs of Atlanta. This area is very safe with great schools. Stick with Alpharetta

If it is important to you to be around others of Indian decent, the Johns Creek area provides access to IT jobs and very, very good schools with a large Indian population.

2010 U.S. Census was 63.5 percent White; 23.4 percent Asian (8.4% Asian Indian, 6.5% Korean, 5.7% Chinese); 9.2 percent African American; 5.2 percent Hispanic or Latino.

I am quite familiar with Schaumburg (used to live in Chicago, still have a lot of friends in the western and NW suburbs) I can't speak about Suwanee, but you will probably be very happy in either Marietta or Alpharetta. In my opinion, unless you're living in an adorable, walkable small town (like Hinsdale) then the suburbs of Atlanta offer a much nicer lifestyle than the suburbs of Chicago. When looking at Alpharetta also look at Johns Creek, and when looking at Marietta, I think you'll prefer East Cobb (Walton, Pope and Lassiter high school districts.)

You'll want to find a job before you find a house. For example, we live in East Cobb and my husband's commute to his IT(ish) job is 15 minutes, little to no interstates. He has many Indian coworkers, and my children have a significant number of Indian classmates in their public school classrooms. There are 3 new houses next to us and 2 of those were recently purchased by Indian families.

The city of Chicago is amazing and we truly felt at home there, but suburbs are suburbs and we vastly prefer the weather and cost of living here! Not mention the topography/geography for weekend trips: mountains, beach, rivers, etc.

Good luck!

We are also of Indian decent. Live in Johns Creek/Alpharetta. Moved from Marietta city schools because of good high school. Have bought in Chattahoochee high school cluster. Love it here.Tons of cultural activities, amenities, stores etc. Have been living in Atlanta for 15 years . Since both of you are in IT chose Alpharetta as it is the hub of IT jobs.

This a thread I posted in 2010 when I wasn't sure if I was making right moving to Atlanta from Chicago.

Enjoy. Sometimes it is fun reading your own old posts when I was in doubt. Fast forward 4 years and it was the best lifestyle decision I made for my family after marrying my wife.

Has anybody moved to Atlanta from Chicago and have regretted their decision?

LOL. I know who you are talking about. That is hilarious. She does seem to show up in these types of threads. LOL.

OP, welcome. Chicago native here. You will be happy you do not have to worry about your car rusting from the salt or digging yourself out here because there are virtually no salt trucks and no one moves a muscle when it snows. I live intown (lived in the city and near suburbs of Chicago too) so I have no idea about the 'burbs that you mentioned but a big welcome.

Default Chicago--->Atlanta burbs?

@ARN160- Did you ever end up moving to ATL ? We live in the burbs of Chicago and hate everything about this place with a passion- harsh winters, taxes, people.. and seriously considering moving to the Atlanta area. Is there anyone who moved to the ATL area recently and could share their experience ?
