I will be moving to Atlanta with my boyfriend. He is going to school at Georgia Tech and I will be going to UGA. We are looking for somewhere to live where it will be an easy commute for both of us. We want somewhere that is not too small, nice but not too expensive. Any suggestions. Thanks!

Lawrenceville, Grayson, Hoschton, Braselton.
The areas are common for couples/families that have committments in Athens (UGA) and intown Atlanta (GT). Good Luck! |

Thanks. We were looking at Lawrenceville. Google maps says it is 41 minutes from GT. How accurate is that with traffic?

Could be over an hour depending on the day.

Remember,"Lawrenceville" encompasses a large area. There is the city of Lawrenceville (incorporated) and a large unincorporated area with a Lawrenceville address. |

Hi, you sound like me and my husband almost 3 years ago. I worked in Atlanta and he was going to school at UGA. We chose Lawrenceville, near the Mall of GA. DON'T LIVE THERE! The commute to UGA will be about 50 minutes (that's what my hubby always said). But the commute to Tech will be >1.5 hours ONE WAY down 85!!!! I am not kidding.
It used to be that moving south so that either party could take GA78 was ideal but from what I've heard it's not so great anymore. But, it HAS to be better than 85 South. At the same time, if you can find a place to leave that is spitting distance of one of the park and ride spots then your boyfriend should be able to get to GaTech easier. Maybe still takes a while but he can sit back and relax and not deal with traffic. That might be your best bet. And, another piece of advice. Don't buy anything. It took us 7 months to sell our house near the Mall. Just rent. Wait to buy until you're both finished school and settled in jobs. And get jobs in the same city!!! Here's the thing...you're in for a time of dissatisfaction. It wasn't fun for us when we did it. Our house was basically just a place to sleep at night. So, you're in for a few years of a subpar lifestyle. But, it's temporary and it IS doable. We did it and we also have a child. It should be easier for the child-free. Oh, and while living near the Mall of GA is better for property values the traffic on GA20 and GA316 is terrible. You'll find backroads in no time at all. Good luck! |

I would look at Stone Mtn or even Decatur.
its easier to drive out to Athens from being closer into Atlanta than it is to drive into Atlanta at all. |

I agree. Your commute to Athens will be against traffic and a breeze. Decatur might be too $$$ for students so look in Tucker, too. Also, the closer in you live to the city the more there is for people your age to do on the weekends...

Actually, after thinking a little more (and reading the newer posts), I recommend Tucker for the GT/UGA split.
I hope this helps! |

The drive to GT would be be ~ 23 miles (exit 82 to exit 60--then a short ride on the connector to GT). |
