I know it can happen anywhere, but it still shocks me a bit. Family-friendly Decatur!

They are family friendly over there but they have had issues with crime.

Absolutely! This is the equivalent of the same thing happening in Hyde Park down there.

If this is the first murder since early 2013 (and I suspect it wasn't random) I tend to believe its not that big of an issue.

I agree. I would be beyond shocked if this was random.

Agreed. Murder isn't an issue there, but they've had a fair number of robberies and burglaries.

As does just about everywhere. Decatur is certainly not a high crime area but it's no more shocking when something happens there than when it happens somewhere else.

You know, that's actually a really good comparison right there, and it puts it into perspective. It's like, that wouldn't typically happen in Hyde Park in general, but I can see it happening on Gasparilla night or something, and it would probably have nothing to do with local residents. And once again, I know, crime can happen anywhere. And like others have said, it more than likely wasn't random.

You guys are killing me. When homicide happens in City of Decatur, there is the tendency to give it a pass since, after all, it is the great City of Decatur. The same homicide happens elsewhere and it is considered meaningful. At least be fair and stop acting like a killing isn't a killing isn't a killing. I'm sure the deceased's parents/relatives don't think it's *no big deal.* It is really interesting how the same thing happens in two different places or with two different groups or in two different socioeconomic levels. One gets a pass from the general public. The other is held up as a sign of a problem. This is precisely what is going on all over the country in so many ways.

^ I totally understand where you're coming from, LovelySummer.

It is however, a huge deal. A dead body in the middle of the street in Downtown Decatur is NOT the norm, by any historical measure.
