Hi,

Recently moved from Singapore to Alpharetta. Can anyone advise about the foreign driving license conversion. I have checked the DDS website but needed few clarifications, may be someone gone through the process can advise. My Singapore license is valid and is in english. Do I have to take written test or both written and driving test? Also, the social security number will take 2 weeks to process and we are staying in hotel for 6 weeks till the permanent housing gets sorted. The website states 2 carry to address proof but we don't have any as living in hotel. Has anyone had similar situation or can advise wht to do. I plan to visit the customer service centre but just wanted to check anyone here can advise.

Many thanks

I believe your Singapore license should be valid until your Georgia license is assigned (so long as it is valid in Singapore). However, you won't be able to get the Georgia license until your Social Security Number is sorted out. You will have to take both a written and driving test. You may not need to, but you can request to take the written exam in a language other than English if you prefer, which some people don't realize.

you might be able to use your office address until you are able to find a more permanent residence address, as long as you have some mail addressed to you at your office address.

I was just over there. Nice little country, but very hot! Part of me sort of chuckled at 'Christmas on the River' as there was a tree decorated with gigantic white snow flakes and "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas" was playing on the PA. Of course it was 92 degrees Fahrenheit and humid!

Anyways the state of Georgia and most of the US will recognize a foreign license as long as it is unexpired and valid. It shouldn't be a major issue when you first get here. You might run into localized issue with rental car agents and/or police who simply are not use to seeing a license from Singapore at all!

The issue you will face is you're suppose to get a Georgia driver's license within 30 days of establishing residency here. This is where I am unsure of how long you can stay in a hotel before they expect you to call that your residence.

In any case... I highly recommend you call a Georgia DDS center (preferably in Fulton County, since that is where you're moving) and make sure you are covered, find out what you need, and when you need it.
